Cough Spit Spudder

Cough Spit Spudder
Ok, so the Leading Coil has been acting up lately, arcing itself to the positive and negative terminals of the coil from where the plug wires come from. Changed the plugs around so leading is firing trailing and vice versa, to see if it is the plug wire's fault. Still sparking on leading coil. I removed the leading coil last night and inspected it for cracks and found none. Taking it down the street and nailing it causes the car to spit and crackle really bad after 4500 rpm. I am afraid I will end up blowing it so I back off and it drives fine as long as I do not give it a lot of gas. So I took off the leading coil and made the trailing coil run leading only. No arcing or whatnot, but the sputtering and coughing is still there! I dont get where this is coming from, I lowered my fuel pressure to 3.5 because I was smelling gas, but this started acting worse and worse, so I bumped it back up to 4 / 4.25PSI. Still does it, and this is really pissing me off. Anyone have any Ideas? I will post pics/vids soon.
I would really want this car to run for next weeks meet, and I know in its current condition It will not cruise the highway without sounding like it will chuck an apex seal or six.

Well, I am thinking since I ran the car down almost completely empty, that it has to be fuel related. I got a huge metal fuel filter on there now, and still falls on its face after half a pedal or more down to the floor. I cant floor it from low RPMs naturally because its a 2 barrel, but when I can floor it it just... I dont know, farts and clatters.
I am thinking about running a can of seafoam through the carburetor. Would that help or is it useless spending?

that sucks, didnt you finally get it running good a couple weeks ago too? ive got my fuel pressure set at 3-3.5 psi, and a couple months back i was getting the same fuel smell as you and found it was fuel coming out of the carbs vent, especially on hard right turns. i got this problem cleared up by dropping the float level a tad.
for the coil arching, you could try putting some di-electric grease inside the plug end that goes to the coil, that should help insulate it a little better. the sputtering could also be related to the cap and rotor. ive never had the problem yet on my rx-7's, but my camry was having bad misfiring issues only w/ more than 30% throttle, and i later found i was arching through the cap to the block. ive never had any problem flooring my rx-7 from low RPM, its slow as hell and makes a lot of intake noise, but never sputters or coughs

Hey Stu, I think I may have an extra cap out in The Garage. I will check tommorow. Here's the thing most younger guys don't realize. Don't mess with everything else untill you fix the first problem. When your belt broke and gave the cap a smack, that would have been the second thing I replaced after the belt. If you are arching through the cap, this may cause the coil to start arching as well. With the ignition not working properly, this is where your hard throttle sputter is coming from. This will also cause the gas smell because the ignition is not firing all the gas you are dumping in it when you smash the throttle. Remember. Fix one problem at a time, before you get everthing out of adjustment, and the car won't run worth a crap at all. Then you will have more problems than you started with.

Yeah sam, I hear ya. I needed to change the FF anyways so I got that out the way. I just put the cap back on and called it a day. It had no problem latching...
But alas, I feel like an idiot. Went to check it today:
Should have checked it first thing, I just never connected the dots. Car ran fine for a few days after I changed the belt, I guess that is when it decided to completely fling aart or something.
God, I feel stupid as all hell
