Finally mounted my Dellorto 48 DHLA carburetor.



In this picture it's just mocked up. Still have to take care of a few annoying things, but she'll be ready soon.

135bhp ---> 180bhp (perhaps as much as 190-195 if I upgrade my ignition, install a lighter flywheel, and electric fan. Stockport ftw! Quite a bit for a 2400lb car)

I can't wait to feel the difference.

More cleaning, and picked up my latest casting project again - working toward a reproduction of the 1980 interior door handle caps.

upgraded ignition

Drove 110mi for breakin purposes. Engine has about 150 on it now.

Those 150 miles have used six gallons of fuel.

Engine is a full bridge 4-port 13B. Drives great, just a little wee bit of stumbling at neutral throttle on the highway, enough to be annoying. Richening that part of the map doesn't help so I left it alone.

 

re-assembled my LSD with my new "frictos" and put her back in the axle housing. factory spec is 0-.2mm clearence, im actually sitting at .01mm interference I bet she'll be nice and tight, but ill have to wait till this weekend or early next week to find out as im still waiting on some "superduty" 1/4" thick plate steel bearing retainer to be made up (like the re-speed ones, but to fit small bearing rear ends )

 

I put an air filter on the brown one. Next I have to build an exhaust for the blue one.

Okay, I had a 1980 for several years, and those pieces do not look familar at all to me.

But the 1980? That was the best RX-7 of all time. OF ALL TIME.

 

Those look like inner door handle trim pieces. Are they?

 

I'm in if you can make the chrome look good. Is the one in the upper right a
completed version? Mine are ok but not perfect, hairline cracks on one of em.

Another great part would be the bezel ring around the shifter boot thats supposed
to be chrome. I recently got one gratis from rwatson (infinite homebrews for you
Robert) but a like new one would be sweet!

Are you positive about that? Several other sources don't carry them any longer, so
I assumed mazda was out of em. I know you work at a dealership or something
so I know you wouldn't get our hopes up for nothing. Hmmmm.

Goes right at the top of the inner handle, covering the screw. Notorious for cracking on the sides & eventually falling off due to age, vibration, and the spring tension of the clip that holds it on.

They are NLA, & one of mine has developed cracks. I epoxied it but it's still just a matter of time, and the cracking wrecks the chrome anyway.

I re-designed the inside of the ones I am making to maximize plastic thickness on the inside, and I'm using a strong urethane that has to be oven-cured but that will resist heat above 250f.

Corresponding now on how to chrome them; gonna look into a couple different approaches.

Since I had to make a mold anyway, I figured I'd plan on running off a few; each one only uses 6cc of urethane & 20 mins to mix pour and cure. I can bake a dozen as easily as one, after all.

The other reason I made more than a couple; for droogies in need!

The shiny one is my good original, used to make the mold.

...Mind reader... Much more challenging part, but I like a challenge. & I'd like to find a way to make the pins stronger, too.

 

There are a few places out there now w/chroming solutions where you can put a flawless finish on just about anything in a rainbow sprectum of chrome colors. They even do whole pannels and cars. I imagine the process is still pretty pricy, but the cost will come down with time. Shift trim rings, license plate lights and whole bumpers can now be done with the right coin.

 

today i picked up some hockey pucks, 3 ft of 10x1.5 threaded rod, nuts, lock washers, and 4x 3" fender washers... you guys should know where im gonna go with this

 

I really need to do the same, I'm pretty sure my mounts are 34 years old..
