looking at buying an mr2 or miata in the next couple of weeks. The 7 is just not a good daily car. Uses way to much gas 20$ every couple days, and I want to start some projects witch I can't do if I have to drive every day(microtech, clutch, bushings, etc) I am leaning towards the miata, but what are a few cars that are similar ( lightweight, 2 door, good mpg and rear wheel drive, also has to be cheap.
I love my rx7 and plan on keeping it this is my third. But considering my mods it is just not a good daily driver
Large street port
front mount
upgraded turbo
12 pound flywheel
larger injectors
emissions removed
3.5 inch exaust straight pipe
stiff race like suspension
the car gets about 10mpg and is stupid loud
also if I get pulled over
I am just looking for a sporty car that gets good gas mileage and scoots around I don't care about power since I have my 7 but it has to be rear wheel drive.

will..... either the mister2 or the muniata are good platforms..... if you go the mr. 2 route, you have a turbo option.... if i had to choose.. mr.2 all the way... miatas are just too cute for guys to drive (sorry casey, but i know you agree
)
)
^^^ yes she does!
Will, considering your not looking for power, Vipers comments about the turbo option are pointless. (sorry Vipers) .... (even though you could easily turbo any miata, its been done time and time again... Hell even Mazda made a Mazdaspeed verssion)
.... BUUUUT, its really a matter of what your needs are.
Miatas are dirt cheap if you go with the older 90-93 chasis that has the 1.6 liter. Hell even the 94-97 witht he 1.8 is cheap (If I were to get a street miata, this is the route I would go, most bang for the buck). mods are cheap, and with a nice set of wheels, some lowering springs (not stiff struts) and maybe a little body mods, a miata can look mean and agresive..... though I do agree with Jesse, Miatas are a lot girly in their stock form.
I know nothing about MR2's other then I am not the biggest fan of them. (I dont know why). mid engine is going to be harder to work on. My mom had a Fiero and to change the back 3 plugs it was a matter of droping one side of the engine to ge tto them. now a 4 cyl MR2 should not be as cramped, but still, have you tried to work on a mid engine before..... it's more of a pain. now on the "plus" side, if your wanting to be uniqe, then the MR2 might be a more uniqe car???

Gotta chime in here . ..
GET THE MR2!!!
Sorry, I am a big fan of the 2's.
Although my next car will be a Miata, but that is only because we already have an MR2.
When I met Steph, she was in the middle of an engine swap on her 91 SW20. Yes, she did it herself . . . that is how easy they are to work on.
The firstgen MR2's use the 4A-GE motor. That is the wide angle valved 1.6 litre screamer. (which used the same size pistons as the 1.6l miata . . .Casey . . are you listening?) Turbo kits are lees than $1000 for everything. Or you can still find the 4A-GZE - that is the factory SUPERCHARGED version good for 200 HP with a little work.
The second gen was either the NA 3S-FE - the 2.2litre N/A motor. Or the 5S-FTE 2.0 litre turbo for the turbo models. (good for 300hp with a little work) But these are also a lot heavier than the firstgens.
Or if you so desire, you can make a mark 1.5 . That is the firstgen with the second gen turbo motor. 300hp at 2200lbs!!! All grip, no slip.
This is a buddies car. With about 300hp and HUGE tires . . this thing is a regular at streets of Willow
