that first MR2.... now thats a MR2 I would own.... that thing is hawt.

that is my favorite generation... if I were to get one, that would be the year..... and I said IF i were to get one....

I am not a big fan of th old school MR2s, I just dont like the looks of them.... :-/

if your getting into power (even though he didnt care about power) you can ALSO turbo a miata for about 900 (ebay special). like the MR2 its dirt cheap and a million companys make parts for them... its part of the Joy of owning one.

I guess it would all come down to how much money I had to spend and exactly what I wanted from the car. both things really play key in what to get. (at least for me)

If I only had a couple grand to buy the car, I would buy the miata.

If I had a few thousand, I would look into the 2nd gen MR2 like above.

If I have lots o money, I woudl not be looking at this catogory of car, so it does not matter.

If I was looking to track the car, it would be a Miata no matter what.

If I was trying to impress people more, and go for looks, then it would be the MR2.

My rx7 is my power fix, I am guestimating I would be close to 400 hp with a standalone based on work done. When I buy a used roadster it would be left stock, funds go to the 7. I want to spend less than 3k. What are the econnomy figures for the two cars.

both Miatas and MR2's will get right at 30mpg in stock form.

The Miata is a way better choice for you. The MR2 has no ABS, no power steering(well maybe) until later years, and the safety standards got a LOT stricter in 1992. So the newer miata would be a better "keep it runnin for cheap" type of car. The MR2 was a lower build rate car, so less made = less parts available.

However . .. . If you can find a nice SW20 (second gen) with the right options, and the guy doesn't want too much for it . . . . grab it. Some of the later SW's were LSD, ABS, turbo cars that got even better gas mileage. And that old iron block can take a beating.

BTW - my apologies for earlier. I was corrected by my girl. ;
- the 5S-fe was the 2.2 N/A motor
And the 3S-GE was the 2.0 . (available in turbo as the Yamaha designed #s-gTe)
If you look close, you can even see the YAMAHA in the plastic underneath the lettering

400 hp is pretty optimistic ...... with what ive seen under your hood.... id say more like 320-350 at most.... thats on 91 octane..... up the octane, up the boost, up the power.... im not saying she cant hit 400, but it wont be on pump gas...

with my setup, (half-bridge, t70 turbo, external wastegate, and TONS of goodies) she was gonna be around 400rwhp on 91 (without meth)...

that is why I need the microtech, and in the near future, water injection. I hope to be close to 400 by years end, probably would need a larger turbo too. But I need a cheap daily driver to get that work done. As is my car is plenty quick and is really fun to drive.

almost forgot, good news for me. After two semesters of school at the retired norton air base, 35miles each way. And over a year of applying at union pacific, two of my bids fell through. one at frezno, and the other in oakland. I go into redlands this monday to take a reading test, basically proves you know english. Then theres the private interview, job is pretty much guaranteed, Just need to pass everything. I am so glad I am almost done with my current job( frozen department manager)

MR-2s are the ****...I've got one that I use for track duties, its a '88 with a Silvertop 20-valve 4AGE with ITBs, Haltech E6X, and some other goodies. The look of the first gen is an acquired taste but the handling is incredible.

The first gen is by far my favorite generation MR-2. They supercharged that generation, correct?

Yes, that would be the 4A-GZE. The Z stands for supercharger.
4 - fourth version of the
A - model line
G - wide angle valves - narrow ecenomy valves are F
Z - supercharger, Turbo charger is T
E - electronically fuel injected.

The later years had the 5S-FE
5 - fifth
S - model line
F - narrow valves
E - electronic fuel injection

Or the turbo charges 3S-GTE
3 - third edition of the
S - model line
G - wide angle valves
T - turbo
E - electronic fuel injection

Currently my MR-s has a 1ZZ-FE, I want the 2ZZ-GZE out of the lotus exige
And mazpower has a nice engine. The silvertop was one of the better ones.
Steph has a silver top goin in an AE86, and a blue top (blue writing) just sittin in the garage

And now back to our regularly scheduled thread

Yeah but I've got ITBs...neener neener... Your suspension selection is better than mine, 1st gen MR-2 stuff is kinda limited. I'll have to hit up an auto-x with you some time and see how many cones I can murder with the 2.

Things have been good, just busy. One of these days I will come out to the meet...I wanted to go tomorrow, but a customer with a Poopra needs his brakes checked out, and someone else needs troubleshooting done on a FC...so I'm stuck at work tomorrow. That's usually how my Saturdays go.

well that sucks (both of you)

the struts on the miata right now are nothing special adjustable tokicos. they are NOT the hot ticket. but soon we will make the switch to the Konis and the coil over kit. its expensive, (at least for me) but worth it from what I hear.

of course its really the tires that make it so crazy!

Yeha, I hope you do come out sometime. I know its no high speed track day like your used to, but it is very pressise and fun! fun to compare times. I think rglebgle wants to bring his MR2 out as well, maybe we can set you two up on a date with me... we will call it the triple date.... oh and there is Jesse... it can be a quadrouple date.... or would that just be a double date?????? hmmm ?????

ooook, i didn't read all of that, but personally I think a miata is going to make you happy right-off-the-bat and you'll have nowhere to go but up. My buddy had one and as stupid as i looked while driving it i had to admit, it was too much fun (even completely stock).

Seems to me like the MR2 would be more time and effort (and money) to get the same results, it just looks like an old, sloppy, worn-out, under powered car.

If you can get past the "chick's car" mentality, the miata is a hands-down winner.

But enough of that. I'm excited about tomorrow!
