its called water remover, it will make ur car run smooth for like 20-30 minutes, autozone sells it for like 2.50, its like flourescent green. all it is is ethyl acohol, which will remove water from the fuel, hence lower hydrocarbons. must be timed right tho, or it wont work.
If its not supose to have and EGR and the guy is telling you it does than just go to another guy. Like I said, it say it right under the hood on the vaccum routing or the emissions label.
I dont work in Vallejo, I work in Napa. If u still wanna bring it let me know. anytime is ok for me 8-5 mon-fri. Ill give you the shop # if you want.
Aftermarket intercoolers might not make emissions go up, but the are illegal on the Visual.

You better check your smog check inspection manual again buddy.
^ Unless you state where you are getting your information it is safe to assume you are wrong and aftermarket intercoolers are not legal unless they have a California Air Resource Board exemption sticker.
Please state your sources.
Thanks.

GTR aftermarket IC are illegal unless they have an OE #. Basically anything from the air filter past the cat is illegal to mod if it has anything to do with air. Most aftermarket IC do not have all the proper connections to hook up to the smog pump and recirculate the air from the BOV.
Trust me I got a ticket for my Greddy FMIC. You will get a citation #27150 B (modified emissions)

If you have your smog check license, you should have your smog check manual.
Check under Appendix K-4
Items that are not of concern as long as the required emmisions controls are connected and functioning. (NO Executive Order number is needed)
If the intercooler has mounting for proper equipment, its legal. If you buy a kit and it doesn't have connections, its obviously illegal and its modifed.
Its entirely up to the owner if they want to actually and try to make it legal or buy an intercooler kit that has the proper connections.

The thing is that there are no IC kits that have the smog connections for our cars, so therefore they are all illegal. There are kits for other cars that are legal but none for our cars. The older Greddy and HKS kits had OE#'s and smog connections but not anymore.

So long as the turbos are OEM, the intercooler is irrelevant. I had my FD failed due to non-stock intercooler (M2 medium) and I questioned them on it. They didn't want to argue so I went home and did some searching. To the shop's credit, they did the same and called me back later in the day and had me bring the car back in and passed it - I also saw first-hand the page in the book referring to this particular rule.
There aren't any smog connectors on the intercooler - they're all on the intake box. Again, my FD has the M2 intake which has hookups for both the relief valves and they passed it.
There's a thread somewhere here on the forum also with a pdf of the page/clause.

HAHA, ok I'm done arguing about intercoolers. 1st of all, you cant MAKE anything legal. It has to be boughten legal with carb #s. Believe what you want. If you bring your **** to me, I'll fail your *** in the blink of an eye with no argument. I've already proven my point.

So r u saying that u can use an aftermarket intercooler that bolt in the stock mounting, (top mount), uses the stock inlets from the turbo & to the throttle body, & has all the ports for the hose hook ups? What would be the point of that? a stock intercooler is just as efficient.
This is all rediculous.
Getting back to this guy's question (which I don't think anybody answered):
some (or maybe all?) years of 1st gens had two different versions of emission controls: California and Federal (49-state). If your car was originally from Texas, then it came with the Federal emission controls, not the CA emission controls. Apparently the EGR is one of the differences.

If your car is a gross polluter could you ever get it changed back to regular, I have heard yes if a ref inspects it and i have heard no from a smog tech before, they said once its labeled a gross. theres nothing you can do but smog it every year, what is the truth

You cant really make a jdm engine get reffed. I think the differences are so minor that a ref couldnt tell. As long as it was a S5. If its an S4 it becomes a little more difficult cause of no EGR. But in a S5 a ref cant really tell the difference. The fuel rails are different but I dont think they will notice that. As long as everything is the way its supose to be I think that it could pass without the ref knowing it was a JDM engine.
Does anyone have a link to the FULL list of smog regulations?
I have been searching for the smog rules in Cali.
So "bump" to this thread to see if anyone has a link to a website with all the info.
I have read all the vehicle code sites.
I have googled the CA smog laws to no avail
I spent 3 days looking for answers, maybe I am not using the right terms.
Here is the deal;
I want an 86-88 FC to strip.
But that includes stripping a lot out of the engine bay too
I am not looking to make it a polluter, but I will be making big changes to the intake. So I want to find a website the details ALL the smog rules, do's, and don'ts for each model year.
Either that or I am gonna buy a seperate engine to put in when smog time comes. But then I still need to make sure it (the modded engine) will pass a visual in case a cop wants to look under the hood.
I am not trying to fudge the rules, just stretch them as much as I can legally.
