Haha, It Takes A Lot More Than A Bill. Prob A Round 3-4, But It Doesnt Just Happen That Way Anyway, If I Get Caught Doin Somethin Like That Its About A 30k Fine For Me And 6 Months Jail Or Prisin Time, And A Loss Of A Career. A Smog Tech Would Need A Clean Passing Rx-7 To Test And Just Use Your Registration For The Computer. But That If Highly Illegal And I Would Suffer High Consequences.

two parts,
1: do you own an RX7? if so what model?
2: what does the emissions test cosist of? what does a tech look for during a visual inspection, and what numbers does the car need to pass? ie. what needs to be present on the car? i know there must be a cat, and air pump. what else does a tech look for?

trying to play dumb to get as much information as possible. so this topic is searchable. emissions pass emissions test testing inspection

1. YES I OWN A 89 TII
2. IT CONSIST OF A VISUAL INSPECTION, FUNCTIONAL INSPECTION, AND ASM (DYNO TEST) AT 15MPH & 25 MPH. dURING THE VISUAL WE LOOK FOR, ALL VACCUM HOSES ATACHED, LEAKING FUEL, EVAP CANISTER, & ALL HOSED ATACHED, EGR VALVE, & HOSES, WIRE HARNESS, INTACT, & SENSORS PLUGGED IN. PCV VALVE INTACT & ATTACHED, CAT CONVERTER, ANY OTHER EMMISIONS RELATER COMPONETS. EACH CAR HAS ITS OWN SET NUMBERS OF ITS MAX EMMISIONS, AND 89 T ii FOR EXAMPLE IS:

FOR THE 15MPH:
HC (HYDROCARBONS) 118 PPM (PARTS PER MILLION)
CO (CARBON MONOXIDE) 0.75%
NO (OXIDES OF NITROGEN) 799 PPM

FOR THE 25MPH:
HC 93 PPM
CO .63%
NO 738 PPM

EVERYTHING THAT THE CAR ORIGINALLY CAME WITH EMMISIONS WISE NEEDS TO BE ON THE CAR AND HOOKED UP PROPERLY.

AS FAR AS CONE FILTERS & EXAUSTS, MOST TECHS DONT CARE ABOUT A CONE FLTER, BUT SOME DO. EXHAUSTS HAVE NOTHIN TO DO WITH EMISSIONS, AS LOG AS THERE IS A CAT W. ATLEAST 8 INCHES OF PIPIING TO PUT THE SNIFFER IN, ITS FINE AND DADNY, OH NO EXHAUST LEAKS EITHER

that was great. thank you.

Ryosuke

EDIT: I ask because I live in MA and we have recently (this year) adopted CA emissins and inspection policies to the letter... not good for me and a bunch of other drivers. there are SO MANY "R" - rejected stickers on the roads now.

I think most smog techs wouldnt know what to look for in a rotary and even then it really depends how strict the particular tech is visually. I'm pretty sure how it is driven on the rollers also affects the tailpipe test right?

are the rumors of engine swaps leagal as long as the engine is newer than the car, has all the emissions and is from the same manufactuer? i.e. an 1984 gsl-se swaped with an s5 tII engine. thanx

Well Anyafter Market Inter Cooler Is Illegal If It Doesnt Have Carb #s. The Only One I Know Of Is The Hks. But Thats Over 2k. Larger Turbo? Well It Is, But Like He Said Most Cant Tell The Difference. But If U Have A Buncha Stainless Steel Or Chrome, Its Not Positive On Your Part. If It Looks Oem, Then They'll Pass It. If U Change A Top Mount To A Front Mount, They'll Ask Q's. Smog Techs Arent Stupid, We Know The Aftermarket Stuff To Look For. The Dyno (roller) Actually Make It Easier For The Car To Pass. It Puts A Realistic Load On The Engine And More Gasses Are Burnt. & It Gives A Realistic #s For Nox Especially. They Make The Tsi.. (two Speed Idle) Test Harder To Pass, If U Cant Use The Dyno. And Then U Have To Do A Functional Test On The Egr If It Has One

ya, if u do that sway u must have every emission component from the car the engine came from, and then have it checked & smogged by a state referee. expensive, but worth it

thanks for the info, do u know how much that would cost? i think the state should eliminate the visual test. aslong as the car meets the snifers reqierments then it shouldnt matter whats under the hood. and also y are newer cars the only ones that get hit, muscle cars probably polute the most and they can stuff the biggest most poluting engine in there yet they dont have to get smoged nor are they taxed for driving them, its just unfair. i know i know life is unfair, whatever.

Thats because "real" muscle cars go up to the late 60's.

Exactly, if I'm savy enough to build a "Modified" car, and make it pass the sniffer, I'm at least savy enough to fudge the inspection. (Not me Personally of course).

I think it would encourage people to get their emissions clean if that was the requirement, get good #'s but because the state has to put their nose into everything, and car manufacturers are probhably behind that part of the bill that got passed, so they don't get overrun by aftermarket parts, that are legal.... Stupid Stupid Stupid Lobbyists....
