4.6l SBF... Anyone?
Anyone ever do a 4.6l Ford in an FC? SOHC or DOHC? I was thinking about this simply because I work at a Ford dealer and get parts dirt cheap.

It's something I think about sometimes, but then I also figure, hell a 460 is only a few pounds more and it's about the same size externally as the SOHC.
Yeah they're smooth, but they have crappy ports (and nothing you can really do about it), a somewhat unhealthy oiling system at the cam area, and you can't go much bigger on the camshafts because of head limitations. They are pretty much a dead end. Ford would have been much better off redoing the Windsor engine lineup to fix the block stability issues, but nooo, they had to have OHC to impress the weenies.

Oh I'm sure they can fit, after all the RX-7's engine bays seem to be *much* wider than any Fox Mustang.
The question is, why? I mean, okay, let's review:
One engine has 281ci
One engine has 460ci
One engine is a dead end performance wise
One engine is "sky's the limit"
One engine needs forced induction to make power goals
One engine can easily meet those goals, without requiring high octane fuels, or engine-killing RPM
BTW - I'd get similar fuel economy with my 5000lb, 429-powered car than I do with my 12A-powered, 2400lb car.

~460-576lb, actually, depending on who you believe. The aluminum block DOHC is marginally lighter than the iron block 4.6, which tells you how heavy the DOHC crap is.
The Viper's engine has nothing to do with the truck version of the V10. (The Viper's engine (1st gen anyway) is based on the original LA engine design with shaft rockers, while the truck V10 is based on the "Magnum" engines that use Ford-style pedestal rockers. (Ford-style? Hell, the valvetrains are interchangeable)
Ford's been suffering from me-too-itis. Everyone is doing OHC engines, so Ford converts everything over to OHC with two exceptions (3.8/4.2 and the 3.0). Dodge has a V10, so they take their sucky 4.6/5.4 and tack on an additional pair of cylinders for 6.8l with 25% more suck. Dodge comes out with tractor-trailer looking trucks, Ford does so too. Chevy comes out with the Impala SS, Ford comes out with the Marauder (long after the Impala SS is discontinued, probably so there'd be no competition on the new *or* used markets).

I just asked since I can get a SOHC for about 1000 bucks with a T45... I knew they were larger than the SBF, but not that much larger. Holy ****!
I never said the Ford OHC motors were in any shape or form better than the LS1. I'm a college kid on a tight budget, so I'm just looking to save a buck or two. I'm still looking for an LT1 and T56. The less money I spend, the better though.
