GT35/40 or GT40R
GT35/40 or GT40R
I am about to make the conversion to single turbo but I not really sure which turbo to get. Ive narrowed it down to either the 35/40 or the 40R. THe guy at A-spec where ill get my kit from says the 40R is like a T78 BB is terms of spool and due to more efficent wheels capable of more power. I havent seen a dyno graph of the GT40R tho so i dont know just how quick it spools.
The GT35/40 however spools very quick but lacks in top end power.
Anyone know what sort of quater you would be doing with a 35/40 @ 415rwhp and a 40R @ 450-470rwhp.
Cheers

Fat wallet = relatively easy
Skinny wallet != relatively easy
It ain't cheap to go fast...
If you care about driving the car on the street, the GT 35/40 is great. I have the smaller version (.82) a/r, and a slight push on the accelerator gets me 10-12 psi. The car drives like a powerful V8. Say, a 1/3 down throttle can break the rear loose in 2nd. Full throttle and the rear gets squirrley in 3rd. So, are you driving it or racing it?

Uran,
It all really depends on what you will use the car for most. I mean will it be street driven? Are you wanting to drag race it? Auto-X it? Road Race? What are your hp goals? If you can provide us with this information we can in turn provide you with more/better help.

Ok the car wil be used mostly for street racing. This said i dont not often do any standing starts but rather rolling starts from 1st or 2nd gear.
Also i will do some highway racing to abot 120 MPH.
Cheers!!

well it also depends on your other mods you plan to do and such. Personally I realize that my GT35/40 doesn't have the best top end but I have full boost by 3400-3500 rpm and it just stays on. If it were between the T78 and the 40r I'd get the 40r. I'm sure the top end power is near the same but with the BB on the 40 it'll spool up faster.
Ideally what hp are you shooting for?

For my edification when you guys say "it lacks top end" does that mean that 415 rwhp or so isn't quite good enough?
Just curious... as a road racer (using the term loosely) that benchmark is more than sufficient.

Apparently the Gt40R makes more power tha the T78 due to the fact that it is the same size turbo and has a more efficent fin design.
I am aiming for mid 10sec passes, so around 500rwhp @19-20psi.
This said I am also looking for a turbo that will hit 20psi by low 4K rpms. I know the 35/40 hits it by 3.5K so im guessing that the 40R will hit similar boost by low 4K.
I think that 35/40 is a great turbo but not really sure if it has the power potential that im after.
All in all i think ill try out that 40R, if im not happy with it then go 35/40.
The following mods will also be done.
Street Port
3mm Apex seals
GReddy 3 row FMIC
comp fuel pump
850pri- 1600sec (are these ok sizes??)
3" exhaust
Power Fc commander + datalogit
3 bar map sensor
50mm wastegate.
Race gas (BP 100) - running on this full time

Talk to the guys at Magnus Motor Sports they make the kit and have tons of info on it. there is also a good thread around here. and there is a member on here who has it i forget his name at the moment... its all on that thread.
basically it spools fairly fast for its huge size and provides insane amounts of power through the whole upper power range.

)I think 415 rwhp should get you into high 10's.
But like many have said...a lot depends on the driver
So nice to see "Church"'s build go into the danger zone. These days, we have SO many great new tools to build track cars. The wiring options alone are great. The harness I built for my Bonneville-raced 750 Honda far outshone what was in my old CYM track car.

What? WHAT?!?! Does the Ghost of <Track> Days Past summon me from a more innocent time?!? Indeed all to my delight! Now I just need to take a road trip south to check out your marvelous 2-wheels toy
