Boost Controller selction - AEM Tru-Boost?

I currently have a manual boost controller but want to switch over to an electronic controller before going to get tuned so I can have some optionality on the fly.

My roomate just purchased the AEM Tru-Boost controller for his Supra, but its not up and running yet so I can't really get a feel for how it performs. It looks amazing, and I like the idea of having a gauge and controller all in one on my steering column.

Can anyone share their experience with the Tru-Boost?

It is a nice setup but AEM gauge build quality is poor (I've had one of their wideband gauges fail and so has my friend) and their service is horrible. You will have to fight tooth-and-nail to ever return anything to them. I had to get customer service to intervene so I could get my UEGO wideband replaced.

That being said, maybe there are no problems with Tru-Boost. AEM just left a bad taste in my mouth though and it will be a long time before I buy any of their products.

Thanks, I appreciate the comment. That is why I chose the Innovative wideband over the AEM. But I also want all my guages to look similar, and AEM has that digital meter along the top have of the gauge plus the digital numbers in the middle just like my Innovative wideband (XD-16 w/ LC-1). using the tru boost and other aem gauges (water temp) they would all look somewhat similar.

If I hear bad reviews of the Tru Boost, I'll have to boost and water temp gauges that match the XD 16 format, (I think the XD 16 can do temp, but not boost, and they are also really pricey, which is why i'm trying to stay away from more innovative).

Forget that crap

Blitz SBC I-color is the BEST EBC you can get, worth every cent and you will be giggling like a little girl each time you drive your car

I think you should go for the old school GReddy PROfec B boost controller. Nice, big, fat solenoid, great solid boost control, reliable, and simple.

Doesn't the blitz unit have a box that you have to mount? If he cares about the interior layout a lot that could be a problem.

I read a thread a while back about the e-boost. Didn't people have problems with some kind of interference? they'd be driving and all of a sudden it doesn't work correctly and they blow the engine. Maybe this was remedied, but I remember a few horror stories. My current turbosmart manual controller works great though.

I just saw a good deal on the Apexi AVC-R, it can monitor injectors and has tons of other funtions. how does this compare to the HKS EVC, Blits SBC, and turbosmart?

if you have any kind of EMS at all the extra monitoring features of the AVC-R are nearly useless

it has a reputation for being among the most difficult boost controllers to tune

^ They are 100% certified garbage, still the same and never will change. There is a list as long as the current PONZI schemes in the US of owners who are asking for full dmages due to engine blow ups cause by the E-Crap Turbodumb units.

I personally have seen them crap themselves in operation. I would not suggest or buy one if it was given for free to me

I have the TEC GT system, and that requires a laptop to see the data, so the AVC-R monitoring may be nice, but i def want something easy to work with. I do like the scramble boost function though, as I'll have 500whp and traction problems for sure, so having it on scramble mode would help that out.

The e-boost is out, AVC-R may be not user friendly enough. the Blitz SBC i-color would be amazing but is out of my price range.

That leaves me with
-greddy profec B - spec II (I had this on my G35 and thought it was decent) but it only has A and B settings, no scramble mode options.

-HKS - EVC - one of the later models with the LCD display.

-Or a lower cost Blitz SBC controller

What do you think is the best and why between the three of those? display quality does mean a little bit, but functionality is my biggest concern of course.

Take a look at the AMS500 or the AMS1000. It is absolutely amazing what people are doing with these and they are not that expensive.

I used to have a Avc-r in my VR4 (dunno what you guys call them...similar to the telon, 4g63t etc) and it was a good controler, a little hard to learn but got boost really early comparted to a normal manual one and the different boost in different gears was really good.

I now have a HKS EVC in my RX7 and its **** easy to use.....has the scramble function and holds boost on a T51R rock solid so cant be a bad controller.

If I had to buy a controller again, I think I would go with the HKS EVC.....just because its smaller and easier to use.

Tursty...which EVC version do you use? there seem to be a million different kinds. some are little boxes like the profec B spec II, and some have display like the AVC-R, but I've seen them have the same number i.e. EVC-5

Maybe I'm mistaken though, any help would be appreciated.

I have used and sold many of the Tru Boost and they work well. They can be kind of confusing to program at first but most people dont read the instructions.

Thats why I like the EVC so much. Theres no programing. It learns your boost curve by itself and configures itself.
