anyone eliminate stock ignitor?

do describe your setup...

i am eliminating it and replacing with the AEM C2DI and car runs like crap

Yes, I am running an Autronic SM2 ECU and an Autronic CDI box. Works aesome. Totally eliminated the stock ignition system.

It probably has something to do with your ignition outputs that you are feeding the CDI box with. What does it require Ve-, Ve+? Stock coils should work fine with the AEM box, so I would not think they are an issue.


What ECU are you feeding it with? AEM ECU? Power FC?

i think it's because i did not shield the cables going to the coils, what do you think?

You do not want to sheild the coil inputs. Twist them. Line the wires up two at a time, put one end in a vice and the other end in a drill chuck and spin it until the wires are neatly twisted. Twist the leading + and -, and each trailing + and - as individual sets.

Coil charge time does not apply to CDI units. You should set that setting to contant duty I am pretty sure. When set to constant charge, the ciol charge time setting will go away.

Is it 4 channel? You need a 4 channel CDI box to run a rotary's trailing ignition. (one input for the leading front, one for the leading rear, one for the trailing rear, and one for the trailing front.)

Check in this order:

Is it a 4-channel CDI? it Well, try this. For testing purposes ignore the trailing and wire both trailing ignition outputs to the leading coils. Set your trailing timing to zero and see if the car will run. If you are unsure, send me the model number of the AEM and I will look it up for you.

Does the AEM require a falling or rising output signal? My Autronics requires a rising output, but yours may be different.

Are you a member of the Haltech list on Yahoo? Someone there will more than likely square you away. if not, I can help get you going.

Hey Ted, I checked out the site and they specifically call out leading and trailing ignition maps. I think his problem is related to the ignition output settings in the E6X.

here's the CDI switch settings

Switch 1 Multi Strike Disable - S1 enables or disables multi-strike spark
plug firings. Disabling Multi-strike (S1-ON) makes engine timing much easier
to check. Enabling MultiStrike (S1- Off, Default) makes the engine run
smoother at low speeds.

Switch 2 Trigger Edge - S2 sets the input trigger edge that the C2DI uses
to trigger the spark plug firing. Rising edge (S2-OFF-Default) is used when
the C2DI is wired in AFTER the ignitor (Ignition Amplifier) or if the
ignition did not have an external ignitor and there is not one inside the
coils. Falling edge (S2-ON) is used when the C2DI is wired directly to the
ECU and the ignition trigger is a digital signal with high signifying dwell
time.

Switch 3 Wasted Spark - S3 programs the ignition for use on engines
equipped with a single coil per cylinder (720 firing S3- ON), or dual output
coil feeding 2 cylinders (360 firing S3-Off-Default)


i turned switch 2 on, so it *should* be right, no?

I"m gonna bump this to see if you ever got it figured out to not use the stock ignitors with the AEM and haltech.

I'll be running an E6K, but I'd assume they have similar features in this regard.

As a side note, Steve Kan told me that he has successfully run the AEM off the PFC without the stock ignitor.

I spoke with 93blackFD and he said that he has since returned to the stock ignitor. FWIW. I guess I'll call steve and see what he thinks about doing this with the e6k if it works on the PFC.

Try lower the dwell time to around 2.5ms. If the dwell time is set too high, it'll cause the coil overheat and eventually fire them.

Hey Steve to get the aem cdi to work with a pfc without the stock ignitor did you have to do anything special.
When I installed mine without the stock ignitor it wouldnt even crank and then installed with the ignitor it fired right up.

The problem with the PFC or any plug and play system is that it still goes through the ignitor first before it gets to the coil, you'll have to bypass all the wires on the ignitor so that the AEM or any aftermarket ignition box reads the signal and amplifiers it. Otherwise, you won't see any signal to the input of the ignition box.

I had mine straight out of the pfc going into the aem input and out of the aem to the coils. I guess something wasnt hooked up right cause it didnt work. Maybee I didnt bypass something right, I dunno but it works now with the ignitor.
