Which is the leading ignitor on my 85 GS???

I need to replace the leading ignition ignitor on my 85 GS.
Which one is it?
The one closest to the vacuum diaphrams (and kind of blocked by the alternator)?
Or the one furthest?

Thanks

As I recall, it's the one closest to the vacuum diaphrams, the one by the alternator.

The trailing igniter attaches to the front coil and should have a blue connector at the coil.

The leading coil is the rear coil and should have a black connector.

Follow this one to the dizzy, it should be connected to the igniter closest to the alternator.

Thanks Ray. Looking at it, that is what I figured. I was hoping it was the other one as it is far more accessable. I need to get together with you to get an ignitor (or 2). Do we need to go to chinese for lunch?

Chinese would be great, name a day next week. I'll bring some igniters.

In the mean time, you can just swap the two igniter connectors, this will make your faulty leading igniter your trailing igniter (where it won't matter) and your hopefully good trailing igniter your leading igniter, which should make the car run fine.

Ray, the only day I could probably make this week is Friday. Next week looks good though.

for the coils and ignitors , I always remember it as ""lead from the rear" like am armchair general does.... As opposed to "lead from the front" as a good leader does. Corny - but its how I remember it......

I reverse the slogan for the ignitors - the leading ignitor is on the "front" of the dizzy, (not the side under the alt.)

So the rear-most coil is the leading one and the front-most ignitior is the leading one?
Wahootee I appreciate the help, but I just want to make sure I understand you.

Thanks

I stand corrected, Dave is right, the front-most igniter is the leading one.

This is easy to confirm (as I just did). Pull off the connector to the front-most igniter and see what color the plastic socket is.

If it's white, it's the front igniter, if it's blue, it's the trailing (same color code on the connectors at the coils).

Sorry for the misinformation.

Greg I'll be at the September OGTA meeting tomorrow night, I'll bring some igniters along and if you can get your FB to creep on over we can get it fixed.

Plus I have a special treat for anyone who shows up in an FB or 86 FC, courtesy of Jamie (glazedham).

Sounds good. Or we could meet at your house and work on the car itself if there's a good time. I'll bring some igniters and your special treat.

There was a tornado silver GS identical to yours at the meeting last night, except it was bone stock and had an aftermarket sunroof, Bob is the owner:

i think i have my coils wired as front leading. but as for the igniters, i just pull the cap. it's listed L and T on the pickup mounting brackets. so making the front leading.
