Congrats Niburu

Niburu,
Looks like you are going to have some fun fiixing your FD up. I have a red 93 that I seem to work on constantly (currently porting wastegate..). If you want, you can swing by sometime and we can test the compression on that thing (I've got the Mazda factory compression tester.

Phillip,

I am almost there;
-I need to get it registered - I sat waited for a 1/2 hr Thursday but had to go back to work, I'll try this Saturday morning.
-need to get new overflow tank for the cooling system (not AST - it has a Petit Racing tank that is just fine)
-I need an air compressor, the tires are very low on pressure - I don't think it would make it up the street without spinning off a tire
-and I definetly wanna burn off the tank of 3 year old gas before I compression test it.

I would really appeciate any advice anyone has or if you wanna over check it out, because I'm learning about stuff I never had to deal with before - like turbo's

~David~

Bad Vibrations

I am posting this in the 2nd gen section as well.

I am getting some really bad vibrations in the car, it is like sitting in one of those massage chairs on high but the whole car is doing it. This started about 2 weeks ago and is getting progressively worse. I have eliminated the tires as it has done the same thing when I put a whole other set on and it still does it.
Things to note the car has had the clutch, springs, shocks, endlinks, and front swaybar replaced, the most recent was the front swaybar about a month ago. I have had my mechanic check and see if he can figure out where the vibration is coming from with no luck.
Initially the vibration would start when you hit 50 mph now it’s doing it at 40mph.
If I am decelerating in gear it does not vibrate, if I pop it into neutral it sometimes continues the vibration but I have found if I move the shifter as if to go into second it disappears.
I now of course suspect the tranny, but internals, front or back connection points, what?
The transmission mounts are in very good condition.
Anyone else gone through something like this?

You may want to check out your diff mount. I think I remember reading that a broken diff mount can cause stuff like that.

SO after posting my thread and gathering opinions and calling my mechanic
I have come to the conclusion its probably a bent drive shaft

https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generation-specific-1986-1992-17/bad-vibrations-471092/

anyone have a spare S5 NA driveshaft laying around to test with
or know a shop that could check it and rebalance/straighten it for less than the cost of buying a new one?

I'm not sure they'll match, Mazdatrix lists different part numbers for the S4 and S5 drive shaft - there is apparently some debate still whether it's the drive shaft or the u-joint
And thinking about it, I don't really have a safe way to get under the car, changing springs and shox in your gravel driveway is one thing but banging away at your driveshaft while the car is up on jackstands that are slowly sinking into the gravel is another.

If you have jackstands I have a concrete carport that you can use to work on it. Let me know.

With the car in the air, you should easily be able to determine if it is the u joints with a pry bar. However, U joints can be a PIA to replace.

It would be much easier and cheaper just to swap out another driveshaft. The S4 NA should work.

my mechanic has looked at it pretty thoroughly and he is pretty good about things, he doestn'y think its the U-joints but he won't discount it either
see some of the details at this thread
https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.php?t=471092
it is getting a little heated in that thread unfortunately
and
rgordon I may take you up on that offer next week (this week I have my son and it would be difficult)
I do have one more outside resource that is going to check the car out for me

Everytime you call me I'm at Summit Point :-)

I'll try you later tonight - I've got nothing but free time right now, let me know a day ahead of time and I'll take the suspension off the car.
