Not sure Michael, they may have found out I voted for Obama, or maybe it was those spy videos I posted from the last OGTA meeting. Anyway, my password doesn't work anymore - I'm socially disconnected.

The Mazda6 video sure does look like a bunch of Southerners in a snowstorm Alex. I'm surprised you managed to get the car up that drive, if it hadn't been a Mazda you wouldn't have had a chance.

Tim, how can you doubt my voracity? Anyway, you might be right, I double checked my snow stick and it could be that I was reading the metric side. Anyway, it's a lot of snow, we're still snowed in here in Jefferson.

I shoveled off the MP5 yesterday but that turned out to be a mistake, now the car is covered with 1/2" of ice (I know it's hard to tell from the photo Tim, but believe me, that really is a full 0.5 inches). And the car still sits in the same spot it's been for the last 5 days.

The good news? I haven't had to go out on I85 and try to make my way into Atlanta for the last couple days. It's a mess down there.

Yeah this is terrible. My flight home was cancelled, so I'm stuck in colorado skiing a few more days. Just tragic.

Stay safe folks.

Well this snow/ice has been interesting. I was supposed to start class Monday but haven't had it and still won't have to go tomorrow. My car has been hanging out in a lot down the street and the other night I had to take some pictures of it for you guys.

Hang in there Tim, I know those mountains can be pretty cruel, especially with all that snow.

Pretty Cool Zach. I wonder if anybody ever imagined back in the '60s when that Bronco was born that it would still be doing doughnuts in the snow and crossing creeks in 2011?

Can you imagine any car made today doing the same in 2055?

I like that point.

I learned how to shovel snow yesterday afternoon. After borrowing my neighbor's snow shovel, I started walking towards their house to return it and they were walking their dog. I walked down the street with them to take a look at the hill halfway down our street, and I ended up shoveling that, too, with my ~70 year old neighbor (female, too!).

Our work:

And my work:

I thought the ~100 feet of the driveway was bad. The hill was at least twice that...

I need some old guy advice yet again, so if someone could give me their .02 I'd really appreciate it.

I'm going to the insurance company tomorrow morning to have my car looked at (All-state). With my most recent estimate at $1900 to replace the quarter panel and repaint the rear drivers side corner, I'm sure they will total the car. Regardless of their decision, I plan to keep the car and use whatever money that I get to fix it entirely.

Should I take the estimates I have already gotten with me? I'm definitely taking the 13K worth of receipts I have for it over the past 8 or so years. If they tell me that they are going to total it, should I haggle with them and say that I'm keeping the car regardless of their choice so couldn't we just apply the money towards fixing it so I don't have to have a salvaged title? Will they even consider that? How to you leverage the value of the car with them?

Any advice on what I should do?

If the damage was caused by the other driver you need to go to HER insurance company, not yours. Your agent will assess the car at the blue book, give you 75% of that, take your car and sell it for a profit.

When my Tan GSL was rear ended out on 85, I wrote a nice but firmly stated letter to the insurance agent of the trucker that caused the accident.

Here's the sketch from the State Police report. I'm V4:

Name: report.jpg
Views: 32
Size: 113.0 KB

I pointed out that I had invested thousands of dollars in the maintenance and upgrade of the vehicle, supported by an itemized list of parts.

I also sent a collection of photos, showing the condition before the accident (1st 5 photos) and after (the last one; see below; notice how the X wheels on the Tan One were always perfectly aligned, even in photos taken on different days; great OCD in that car).

Size: 255.0 KB

I also said that in the current market it would cost at least $3,200 to replace the car.

The appraiser sent by my insurance agent appraised the car at $2,200, just under the blue book at that time ($2,400). The agent said that my company would pay 75% of the appraised price ($1,650) and keep the car.

But my letter and photos worked, the trucker's insurance company cut me a check for $3,800, which included expenses for the rental car I had for a week. Maybe the best thing was that the Tan One came out of the deal with it's original title intact, no salvage title.

I used that money to buy the Brown One for $1,575 and the Tan One lived to drive another day.

Thanks for the help, guys.

Ray, I am going to her insurance company, All-state, sorry for the misunderstanding. I've already talked with both sides and will have 3 different estimates on the damage by the 10:30 appt tomorrow. The woman admitted fault immediately and I'm sure that it will hold up. I was dead stopped and she backed out a good 5 feet without looking. The damage isn't as bad as your tan one. The only thing affected was the read drivers side quarter panel. Here are the pictures I have:

Before:

After:

Size: 102.4 KB

Name: Accident123110021.jpg
Views: 31
Size: 88.3 KB

I plan on taking my computer tomorrow with all of the pictures, as well as the +13K in receipts, all 3 estimates (one being a Mazda dealer), and all of the information I have pertaining to the accident. It's really not that bad damage wise, but by the way everyone talks, my rear quarter panel will have to be replaced, not beat out and filled, and that's where half of the repair cost is. If I could just get 2K from them and keep my car without it getting a salvaged title I would be fine...

Thanks again.

So I went to the other person's insurance company today and I'm pretty sure they are going to repair the car and not total it. Their estimate was for $1393, which replaces the rear quarter with a salvaged one for $150, repainting that, and repainting the rear top section where the Mazda and RX7 badges and 3rd brake light and keyhole are, replacing those 2 badges with new ones.

I'm assuming that if I remove some of the parts and reinstall them myself, as well as reuse the original badges, I might be able to put that money saved towards repainting the roof and sunroof. One, because it is slightly faded, and two, I don't want to see the burn line right there every time I get into the car.

So anywho, I've still got to call and talk to a claim rep in their Atlanta office and figure out what I'm going to do for another car while mine is getting fixed. Since I don't have full coverage on the FC, it will not transfer onto a rental car and I can't buy rental insurance since I'm under 21. I can get a rental car as long as I'm 18+, but I can't get their insurance...

Thank you again for the help, guys. You know I'll post back up as soon as I hear something new.

From our Roving Reporter Greg the Elder:

Oh rotary god who art in heaven,
Give us this day our daily rev to redline
And forgive us for owning piston engines,
As we forgive others for buying them.
Lead us not into temptation to use cheap oil,
But deliver us from carbon buildups.

Amen

Although I don't see the first part of that to be entirely true (unless you mean owning them as having purchased one, instead of owning them as being better than them), the second part made me chuckle.

Nice.

Look what I snagged on ebay: New old stock dizzy cap with genuine brass contacts for the low bid of $6.20; $13.95 shipped. Made in Italy just like those Del Horto's.

You can't find them like this anymore, all the new ones are that crappy aluminum. This one must be twenty years old, judging from the yellowed box.
