Question Performance/Fuel Economy Tradeoff?

So there's lots of things people are talking about that increase your car's performance (e.g., hp boost). When my 7 was my daily driver (in the city!), my biggest gripe was how much it cost to just run the thing (gas prices in Canada have always been a sore point).

So my question is whether you can have your cake and eat it too? Can you invest in some performance modifications that might give you a slight edge in say horsepower, or handling that also improve fuel economy?

rotaries in general have poor bsfc's vs. comparable piston engines, due to their inefficient combustion.
