been doing some research regarding V-Mount or might as well say Horizontal Mount intercooling. Was wondering for those of you that have put them in what size of a radiator were you able to use? but was wondering if they will fit in the lower position required for the H-Mount. I Have an approximate size for the IC measured out. But was just wondering if any of you had some good input... BTW the car is an 87 TII with a Street Port and Ported WG.. Going for the H mount, 3inch TID, Exhaust, Emissions Removal..Etc. I have done Front mounts on several cars including my 180sx and a buddies S13. but i think the H-Mount would be a unique and functional alternative. Fabrication etc.. is no problem just wondering what setups, sizes, brands of radiators and intercoolers you all used..

any input is greatly appreciated..!!

Its easier to get a custom radiator made. And cheaper too. Google custom radiator for good locations - afco, griffin, PRC, alumrad.com etc.

No idea what an H-mount is though....

Perhaps not for an FC. For an FD, yes. Custom isn't too costly depending where you go. Plus the in/outlets get placed in the location you need or want.

Yeah, that Blue FC is my car and it is definitely a Horizontal Mount Intercooler set up, 'cause I say so

The intercooler inlet duct is completely separate from the stock radiator opening in the bumper, therefore the intercooler is independent from the radiator in its function and the intercooler configuration name should not reflect any relationship to the radiator in my opinion, since the radiator could be placed anywhere in the car and the intercooler would work the same.

I agree with the above posters that if you are going through the effort of fabricating the mounting for the radiator anyways you should use a cheaper and larger radiator than the drop in FC ones.

My 27" x 19" x 3" Griffin radiator was $200.


From what I have read a pull through fan is a superior performer to a push through fan. I have been very happy with my Black Magic fan.

Back in the day. Ah, I am old enough to remember the '80s too! :P

In the '20s (no, I am not that old- this is from reading) they started stuffing radiators in aircraft wings with the intake duct at the leading edge and the exit at the top of wing; sometimes the radiators were vertical mount sometimes horizontal mount and often something between the two.

In the '60s race cars regularly began to take cues from aircraft aerodynamics; the Cobra Daytona Coupe for example used aircraft "radiator in wing" ducting, the radiator halfway between horizontal and vertical and the oil cooler horizontally mounted in the duct.

We have a roots supercharged, 12a powered, tube frame, 510 rear suspension Capri in our club that uses an air to air IC horizontally mounted close to the SC behind the radiator right under the hood vent. Don't know what else to call that but horizontal mount IC. Oh yeah, could be called weird- and fast .

 

What type of radiator did you get? IS it a custom v mount setup for an FD? If so could you send me pics. I am going to have one made but the place I looked at is way more expensive.

It is on top of the longitudinal axis of the vehicle. The original TII also has a top mounted intercooler. The other two main types of old school intercooler terms were bottom mount and front mount. I can only guess at what terms are running around the internet nowadays, but I try to keep up with these things the best that I can. I used to read Wikipedia, but it has now gotten as silly as the Urban Dictionary.

Just make up a name like everybody else. Weird and Fast-mount (WaF-mount) works, lol. Some day I'm going to design my own Evil-mount (E-mount) intercooler.

 

Not all radiators are made the same, even by the same manufacturer. If you really need a lot of cooling, you may want to contact the manufacturer for recommendations, and maybe pay extra for better construction. See this web page for a brief overview:
