Custom built tranny

Just doing a little research ahead of time but does anyone know of any shops that can build a 6 speed tranny to fit a 13B and/or 20B FD? I already know all of the gear ratio specs that I want. I've found 2 places in florida that claim they can build it but I'm wondering about anywhere else. Maybe even some F1 tranny builders. I'm looking to spend around $20,000 for it to be done right. more if necessary. Hell, if I could get I'd want paddle shifting as well but H-pattern is fine. Not too interested in sequential since this is for road racing not drag.

Skyline 6speeds have been swapped in before, i belive there are production bellhousing adapters available somewhere

Another option would be beefing up an rx8 6speed which already has the same bellhousing pattern as a 13B, just make custom mounts and driveshaft and your good to go

The trannys off of the 2JZ also work. There is also Quaife, they have gear sets that will work with the stock box, or have them build one.....that'll take up your budget.

Aside from a new driveshaft and mounts what else would be needed to swap a Supra tranny in?

i have hurd both hks's and guru's tranny's require alot of maintence to keep them running great, not that they are enferior transmissions, its just the nature of their design from what i understand

If memory is correct, i believe all that is needed is the adapter for the bell housing. I think someone from the forum has done it already....try doing a search and see what you come up with it.

all right did a search and only got through the first page and a half. So far I've found adapters for the 80's supra transmission which is a 5 speed, a celica transmission, and a T56 transmission. And after reading a thread by Bridgeport, it seems that the T56 would be better than the supra's due to the fact that they stopped making the supra's a while ago. So anywho that might be a better option. I'll go ahead and post a link to the thread so you can see what I'm talking about. Thread

i agree, the v8's they put them on makes so much torque, so getting one to hold up to even a 20b should be no prob

Yeah but one of the debates in the thread was about how it would hold up to high rpm ranges.

The largest issue I see with the T56 is the gear ratio. 6th gear is a bloody 0.50. With a roadrace gearbox you want a tight ratio setup. I'd be looking for 2.7 or so for 1st and a mildly overdriven top gear or straight 1:1 top gear.

from what I've heard about the dog transmissions is that they are pricy, but worth it if you can afford the maintenance. They use dog gears, which are straight instead of skewed like normal production gears. They ingauge much faster, but also wear a lot faster, and a rebuild is something like 500$. They shift fast, infact you have to or they won't because the gears don't mesh at different speeds too easily, but you can shift without the clutch and they're somewhat noisier than regular trannys.

Just want to restate that one of the key points here is that the gearing ratios will be custom

Where does a 19 year old get $20K to spend on a transmission anyway?

Would an upgraded S2000 tranny work? I always hear how great their shifter is. Maybe this could be nice for your project?

In Reference to RPM the T-56 can handle

One of my best friends has a SLP Camaro SS.. It has a T-56 in it, and it is not a stock one as he ordered it specific.. as well as the mods to the engine which were extensive.. he has 445 to the wheels with cats etc.. all "Stock".

His Redline on it is 7500.

Sequential vs an air shifter is far different...A lenco for instance would not work for road racing, a Hewland however would be EXACTLY what youre looking for. Hell, there are even systems out there now that when you go to downshift, tells the computer to blip the throttle to rev match everything for you, in less than a hundreth of a second.

The HKS dogmission, I havent heard too much about, the Quaife gear box however I have heard good things about.

(Ive been dreaming thinking about what trans I would use...so I have a list.)

Hewland
Quaife
This thing...which looks bad *** http://www.autotech.com/quaife/gears/rx7.htm
You should also look up:

Jericho (Ford branded racing transmission...for Nascar legality)
Tex Racing (Chevy Version of above...)

^Both very strong...and both have 6 speed models AFAIK

Tranzilla (T56's built to hold 1000hp...think thatd work)
TKO 600
http://www.gearboxmanufacturers.com/...l-gearbox.html

You should have enough info there to make your head spin, that said, have fun.
