Has anyone considered that FDs are over a decade old? When you compare a 93 EVO and a 93 FD, the numbers are pretty close.

Car weight 0-60 hp torque

FD 2826 lbs 5.2s 255 217ft-lbs
EVO 2734 lbs 5.1s 247 228ft-lbs

But that is not what we are doing, we are comparing a new car with all of the benifits of new technology and running it against a car that is over 10 years old. I am very proud of all of the 7s out there (modded or not) that are tearing up EVOs and everything else. I am not saying that I dont respect the EVO. I respect the car a lot, and wouldnt mind having one in my line up. But if people are saying that its not fair to compare the EVO IX to the FD, then I say they are right, but only because the FD is at a disadvantage and not the EVO. Long live the RX-7!

So you look at both cars of the same age and you see that they were very similar even back then. I only had a problem with the people(person) trying to say that the FD dominates the Evo in every way. It's true that the Evo has the advantage of continuing to have been made for 10 more years, but it's not like the 7 hasn't made any advances ever since it stopped being produced. The aftermarket for the 7 advanced with time, and new technology is constantly being used to make it better.

Stock for stock the new Evo outperforms the FD in every way, so don't compare modded to stock and come to the conclusion that the stock car sucks.

Hmm... Production of the FD stopped in 2002. I wonder how a 2002 Spirit-R FD would compare to the equivalent 2002 EVO? Those stock FD's are no joke and are the pinnacle of the 3rd Gen. Rx7...

Anyone have stats on the Spirit-R?

Hmmm. Good query. I wonder how it would hold up against an Evo fq400 which I would probably consider the pinnacle of the Evo.

I also wonder how much new safety and emmisions requirements offset the advancement in performance technology. No doubt that they are the main culprit behind the ever advancing weight of our beloved sports vehicles.

Yep, neither the Spirit R or the FQ400 are available in the U.S. so if you want to pull that one then they are a fair comparison.

The Spirit R still only has 280hp. It's not like they made a huge leap.

Need we even speak of the almighty FQ series evos? (look em up if you dont know!)
Which if i recalled were compared to lambo murcialogo (spelling?).
Sorry bud as much as i love then seven and espeseially the spirit r, i think the evo could take it... but there are little cars in the world i would rather have. much love to the evo, even more so to the fd. as i see it the evo is the only us production car that should becompared to an fd, and im glad that it is.

but to the evo guy who got up on his "high horse speaking of his all mighty evo" was uncalled for, there are loads of cars on this forum that would so called tost your evo... even my fc, after my clutch will be making around 450hp. not saying that it would you, just saying give us more respect.

i plan on eventually buying an evo a few years down the road when im no longer a poor student, especially since i plan on spending much time in the mountains.

I agree. I just got a little defensive.

I don't think I was lording the Evo over any RX7; all I wanted was to clear things up so that people(person) would stop calling it crap in comparison to the 7.

I'm in the process of getting more power out of my FC right now. I know what both cars are capable of.

RX-7 is good in a straight line.
Evo is good in a straight line.

RX-7 is excellent in the turns.
Evo is excellent in the turns.

RX-7 is a sexy car.
Evo is not as sexy of a car.

RX-7 is RWD.
Evo is AWD.

They're both awesome cars. The Evo is a kick *** rally car, that somehow made it to the streets, like the STi. All 3 of those are monsters/potential monsters.

You all know it takes money to go fast... I don't really know what you guys are arguing about. My buddy's got a friend whose uncle knows a guy whos old college room mate has a 68 camaro with 20,000 hp and 25,000 ft/lbs tq.

Ownt.

i dont know if i read correctly, the FQ400 and the FQ800s were crazy in power but didnt come out that great at handling in the end. i was an evo fan for the longest time, but ended up a 7 owner and those FQ series evos are crazy expensive.. too rich for my blood

The handling was at least greatly improved on the FQ400. I've never heard of an FQ800. Even the base models of the Evo are very expensive in Europe. The U.S. gets them the cheapest because they leave out a lot of the good stuff like Active Yaw Control and such.

I'm really a fan of any car that can prove its worth in one way or another, and I consider myself lucky to own both.

Hey

The Spirit-R was more then just a power upgrade. It had upgraded suspension and had some reliability mods on it. I read the article a long time ago.

Who cares about stock vs stock. Just because one manufacture puts stickier tires on or whatever and looks better on paper doesent mean it will perform better modded on a race track. I still think the 7 outclasses the EVO.

Cars earn there respect in racing history which the EVO does not have to much of at the moment. You are essentially paper racing. I think they call it bench racing?

I'm not sure why you're saying the Evo doesn't have racing history. You obviously missed the parts about Tsukuba and several other Japanese track records being owned by Evo's. The HKS Evo is making it very hard for other cars such as the Skyline to get its full glory. The Evo is the replacement for the Skyline since it is capable of insane power and weighs a good chunk less. You clearly don't watch WRC, or go to your local SCCA events. The only place in the world that doesn't hold the Evo in very high regard is the U.S., and that's because people here care more about who can go straight the fastest.

If you don't care about stock versus stock then what do you care about? Who has the most money dumped in their car? Because that's all it is once you start to mod.

i think we've established that the evo was not meant for straightline. neither is the FD really. i like both cars. the FD is prettier. but try driving an FD on a mud and snow covered mountain pass... i'd love to have an evo in addition to my FD.

Thanks for the laugh.

I hope you weren't being serious, because if you want to go off of that one race where the factory supported car won, then you would also be saying that CRX's are better than FC's and FD's while the Evo stomped all three of them.

Ive seen an FQ-400 play with a TVR and Porsche Turbo and it did alright. Too bad I was in my friggin Rover (Honda Accord)

But they are priced around 90,ooo bucks... A little too high for me to consider buying it. Im sure there are some more interesting cars for that much.

~Ramy

From all the people quoting and then saying "Another arrogant evo owner" it comes down to the people, not the cars. This is an arrogant statement as well. Not listing the evo as a competitor is silly and saying that it would be a waste of gas is equally silly. A nicely modded evo IX can make alot of power and torque with minimal mods. For example, a custom dyno tune TBE, MBC, and a decent intake at around 22 psi and some good ol 93 will make GOBS of power. The norm is around 345 - 360 whp (dynojet numbers) and an equal, greater, or slightly lesser amount of torque.

If you do some searching you will find a video of a 410whp 13B rx7 racing a friend of mine's (CT9A GSR's) evo. The evo at the time was making 385 whp and 421 lb/ft. The evo left the RX7 because of the difference in torque. On a stock turbo or 50trim setup evo, the evo will most likely make more torque than the RX7 all day long.

With that said, the RX7 will be more nimble around a track seeing as it is ligher weight, and the RX7 will spool bigger turbos quicker making it just as good if not a better car for higher horsepower applications...excluding the reliability issues present with the 13B. Regardless if you believe they exist, they do. On the other hand the evo with a bone stock motor (4G63) can withhold about 550 whp safely. This is on a basically stock motor (with the exception of cams), no head work, no internals.

To say that a stock evo IX is a waste of gas for a 410 whp RX7...yeah it might have been. But give the evo a turbo back, a dyno tune, a manual boost controller, an intake and run it at 27 psi and then have a go and see how wasteful it is.

The RX7 is also by far the most beautiful car to come out of japan, these cars aren't levels above each other, they're in the same box. So stop locking your mind inside yours and think about it.

No, I don't think any one group of owners is bad. There are always bad apples that spoil the bunch. The NSX guys are just mad because they spent too much money for a honda. hahah jk I wish i could afford one.

Lol, i will say the evo forum guys HATE the SRT4 people with a passion for some reason.
