Red face FDNewbie...not as fast as he thinks

So a local friend of mine came over tonight w/ his friend, who's got a BEAUTIFUL '97 Supra TT manual, BPU, running 17psi. Not sure what all the mods are, but I know he's got the HKS titanium exhaust, so it's safe to say he went all out w/ the rest of the mods too

We thought we'd go for a run...he's never raced an FD, and I've never raced a Supra. I was low on gas, so we did one or two halfass runs from a roll. First one I was in third, and I got S P A N K E D. Second, I dropped it to 2nd, I was at about 4500rpm, and got on it. By the end of 2nd it was neck and neck (although the Supra got the slight jump, but I was starting to reel it in), then I missed third. So I got gas (full tank), and we went at it on the way back.

First time, he got a head start (went right after the 2nd beep haha), and put a hurtin on me. The second time it was pretty much a fair go. Again from 2nd, around 4500 rpm, and at the 3rd honk, he immediately pulled forward so I was up to where the door & fender meet, but by the end of 2nd I was closing in. Once I got into third, he pulled past me, and I was at his quarter panel. By the middle of third, he was a car or so ahead...and as we came close to topping third, he was about a car and a half away MAN...I just got walked lol. And NICE too.

It's my first loss, but it put a smile on my face. I was starting to think I was the fastest thing around here (I've already taken a WRX STi modded, a 2004 Porsche 911 4S, a GSX-R, an RC51, and kept up w/ a Z06. Now I just added an '04 modded Cobra to the list, and that's w/ him alone, and me WITH my passenger Car impresses the HELL outta me for the mods and age/wear it has ). Naturally, I rolled down the window, and gave a HUGE thumbs up, and dragged myself home haha. Man that thing is fast... What a great way to end my FD's current state on...she's leaving to Gotham for some CRAZY stuff in a day or two!! And when I come back, the rematch is ON!

Good runs man, remember when I said the car dosnt feel as fast as it was 2 days ago, well I found out it was true, my check engine light came on as we parted paths tonight, which means I have been driving with it on for 1 day, which also means my car was pulling timing and causing me to lose a lot of power. I knew something was wrong when I got in it today, but good runs man! Keep in touch with me and my cousin, and we willl get some more runs when you get your car back! Take care.

Mods:

HKS Titanium Exhaust
3.5inch Down Pipe
HKS Intake
Greddy 4 row Intercooler

Wink

I've raced a supra TT, 300zx TT, carrera s4, s2000, EVO, WRX, etc on the freeway and I walked on all them. I too feel like my car is the fastest car that's around. I guess time will come sooner or later for all of us.

RE Suzuki, yea I've taken all the same cars you have, minus the Supra. I'm guessing the Supra you raced wasn't as modified or running as much boost as the one I ran, cuz I have more mods than you haha. BTW, beautiful FD!

Bee, shhhh. Don't get me started lol. If you were within arm's reach...hahaha

Bah, you beat me to it. lol

Sounds like you had fun Ramy, but if you think a snailed 6 banger is quick, you now have the new C6 Z06 out which also presents some competition. For future reference, remember that another 8 banger 7 is on the horizon as well.

Hope gotham works magic into their sauce my man, lol. j/k Nice runs though, and I look forward to seeing what goodies your car comes back with. Should be interesting.

Why are you choosing to send your car all the way to Texas when you have a shop namely pfs which is just as good if not better within an hour from your house? I don't understand why people do not support their local shop. What's the thought there?

Did both of those start at the same speed? Like in the first one you were in 3rd and at something like 4000RPM?

Was just wondering that when I first read it.

a little more boost and you would not have had a problem.. I raced a MKIV w/ all bolt-ons at 18 psi and won convincingly from a 2nd and3rd gear roll every time. Get some more fuel to that thing!!Good runs. Garret

A little more boost and his engine goes *POP*, lol. Apparently Ramy likes testing the stock fuel pump flow rates compared to his injectors duty cycles to see which fails first.

18 psi is not making any more power than 15 psi. I think effeciency range is down around 12-13 psi on those stock twins. I ran 15psi for a couple of years under the dillusion it was making a big difference just like you are doing now.

If you want to go faster, do it right. Get a real turbo with the fuel, ignition and tuning to take advantage of it.

Fixed

Hey, whats up Dave, long time no chat. It's been some time since I've seen you or the car (which seems to be making some nice power). You see to be more active on the forum nowadays.

Was this deja vu? Hmmm...nope. It's def you asking the same question every time I mention Gotham https://www.rx7club.com/showpost.php...7&postcount=61

Answer hasn't changed Dave. And as I mentioned in the earlier thread (where you asked me the exact same question), if you have an issue, feel free to PM me (vs. venturing off-topic), and I'll be happy to discuss it further. I will say, however, that Ray is indeed an incredible mechanic and a great guy. I like him a lot. But hey, the amount of money I've spent at his shop says that already

I honestly don't remember. I just didn't think his Supra was gonna be that fast. I have this (yes I'll admit it) cocky attitude that 99% of the time, I don't even NEED to downshift to take cars. I've taken cars in 4th and even 5th gear. When I've dropped it to third a few times, it was VISCIOUS. This time, I got caught w/ my pants down lol, so I took it to second after that.

Yea I'm sure I needed to turn the boost up to even things out a bit. But as Kayin said, I'm flirting w/ the rotary widowmaker as it is. I'm running 13psi, seeing 96% duty cycle at the top of 4th, and on a cold night like last night, I was seeing 1.04 bar (15.08 psi), w/ 100% duty cycle (Hey, the motor's tired and has low compression...it's on the way out anyway!)

Haha....that woulda been freakin hilarious haha. I'm sorry about that btw... It happens. It's just one of those unofficial taxes you just gotta pay and go =-/

Very true, but I was under the impression that the turbos are still within their 80% or so efficiency range well up to 15 - 16 psi? The other thing is, (and I'm sure you have a lot more experience than I here, so correct me if I'm wrong plz), but once you hit 15+ psi, you should be running race fuel to do it safely, yes?

Ramy, no need for race gas at 15psi. Have a look at a dyno sheet of a well tuned stock twin fd 15psi versus a well tuned 13psi with the same mods. I think you will see the minium horsepower difference.

Honestly I forgot that I already asked you why you are sending the car to Gothom. So whats the reason again?
