Fritz,
1) As I watched you brake/shift from 5th to 3rd at the familiar turn 1 at Summit Point's big track, you rapidly go 5-4-3.
are you brake shifting?
are you double clutching between each gear?
I recall I was taking it easy on that turn (needed to drive home) so I braked early and when the revs were low just relied on the syncros to get me in 3rd.
2) I recall a TD04 was the stock turbo on the very fast 2.3L Saab 9000 aero. Do you know how your turbo compares with that one? List of TD04's:
saab-tuners.com ][ TD04 turbo FAQ
3) You thought using 275 35 17 tires (vs 40 series) would allow you to lower the car 1". That tire is 1/2" smaller in radius. So I guess you bolt them on and you are down 1/2", and then you lower the C/O's for 1/2" more drop at the wheels, since you have 1/2" more radial clearance with the smaller tires.
.

I'm not familiar with many turbos but I'd compare the t04r with a t78
yep 1/2 inch each way on the tire for a full inch drop.
A friend of mine ran a Z28 Camero, lowered and fitted with a Baer Brake upgrade up front, with Performance Friction pads. I ran Porterfield R4's up front. The PF pads caused a fine mosaic of shallow cracks on the rotor surface, and sort of polished it too, like yours. My pads were like sandpaper on the rotors, leaving a shallow phonographic finish. Looks like there are at least two methods of creating friction.

BMW Tarheel club event on the VIR North course 06-2014
As mentioned in one of my previous post I recently had a shop down in NC put in a cage that was the worst I've ever seen so I had to get that removed and done properly by Piper Motorsports who did a fantastic job. The cage done by Piper is so far away from me I won't even need roll bar padding and his welds etc... are always top notch. Stay tuned for some pictures.
I have been suffering from a leaky diff every time the fluid gets overheated so I also had Piper install a diff cooler which was done exactly like the trans cooler with quality lines, AN fittings, Tilton pump and wired in line with the trans switch so I simply hit one switch and both come on. In my opinion this car needs both a trans and diff cooler if it's making over 300 rwhp and driven hard on track.
So far the current trans with cooler has approx 2000 miles on it and it's going strong.
On the last engine build which was done 1200 miles ago I had ALS seals put in and they appear to be up to the challenge of track life. The previous two engines went approx 7k miles before the power was down enough that a rebuild was in order. Both of those engines suffered from warped apex seals. Another change I've made with this engine is deleting the OMP and adding synth premix 1 ounce per gallon. Fingers crossed that the ALS seals along with a heavy dose of premix will give the engine a bit more life if no mishaps cause the engine to blow outside of normal use and if that happens I should be able to save the turbo because of the soft seals.
Enough about the car and onto the next track day. So this time Pete was able to make it, we meet at my house and head down to VIR to drive with the BMW club on the N course. We decided to do this event because the North course is really fun and variety is the spice of life
Friday was HOT (90 plus degrees) and the newly paved paddock is completely awesome but it adds another 20 degrees to the ambient temp so we were soaked in sweat most of the day. Also Pete's new Atomic steering rack wasn't working quite right (brackets that hold it in place don't fit well so it's sliding on one end and flexing back and fourth on the other end) so we tried to fix that as best we could and just clammering around working on a car in that kind of heat will wear you out. After tightening some stuff up we were satisfied that it would be ok and fortunately it stayed together for the 300 plus miles Pete drove. Overall it was a great weekend and we again saw Hoi at the Tokyo Grill and he had his FD there and it was looking fabulous rolling on some fancy new wheels. My lab times were nothing to cheer about but no worries I was on old tires and finding clean laps on the N course is next to impossible especially when driving with lots of old e30 and e36 BMWs.
Here's a vid that depicts both the traffic woes and what happens when oil is on track. The oil spill happens right at the end and fortunately nobody hit anything.

These cars really can/do spoil you. Both Pete and I were simply rolling over all those 20 year old bimmers. What's awesome though is our cars are also 20 years old

The original engine was built and ported by XS engineering with 3mm atkins seals.
The 2nd engine was built by a friend Kyle Rusert who used OEM 2 piece seals and atkins 1 piece corners. Along with the warped OEM apex seals one of the corner seals was damaged/broken and the wear was worse so I'll stick with stock corners from now on.
3rd engine is built and ported by PFS (ray wilson) with E and J (formerly known as ALS) seals, oem corners, oem coolant o rings.....

That oil on the track let "fast hands Fritz" show his skills with ~6 swings back and forth on the steering wheel in a second !
You get all kinds out there. I was impressed to see an older Ferrari at Summit Point, unitl I got trapped behind him for most of a lap ... he was driving like he was enjoying a glass of wine at the time. Later I got behind some gal driving the wheels off a Chrysler K-car .... she was flying and in the carousel, the car looked cartoonish the way it stretched out the suspension and looked like it was ready to roll ... but still fast.

As always, an informative post - thanks Fritz!
Some nice sideways action there at the end...gets my heart rate up just watching it.
It would be cool to have a camera showing how fast you run away from those cars you pass...or pivot the mirror in such a way that you could see it. Of course you wouldn't want to do anything that reduced your vision lol.
Thanks again!

I'm guessing I'm leaving them as fast as I'm catching them.
I plan to do the UTCC this year and during that event I'll be the one being left behind LOL

There was a gentlemen enjoying some wine and cheese in a Mazda CX5 driving in the instructor group, so I completely understand
Thanks Allen

If you surf youtube, you will find someone with a camera that also includes the rear view, in the bottom right corner of the viewing screen.

There are some great video cameras made just for racing. This guy at VIR in a low budget trailered Mazda 6 with mostly stock 3.0 engine with bolt-ons, has one with all but the rear view.

If I'm top 10 it will be because nobody showed up LOL
I haven't seen the list of cars yet but typically you'll see a lot of 500 plus HP cars and some of those will be driven by pros.

I'm going to scoop up some sort of AIM smarty cam possibly before my next track event. I think a camera on the roll bar, one pointed at the feet, one pointed at the driver and one point out back would be super cool. However for now I'll be happy with one cam and some data .....

That cage was way crazier than any of us imagined. I have some sections from it and it will absolutely freak you out. The pics on Mitch's site don't hold a candle to actually looking at that mess, JUST WOW!!!!!
Mitch of course did a KICK *** job. I don't even need padding. Side halo bars are not visible, upper cross bar is probably 2mm from the roof etc...etc....

Can't make that, doing Track Daze this weekend and Watkins in two weeks. Three weekends in a row would be a little much.
