My FD 2jz Project

Really sucks that both your hoods were damaged in transit . Mine arrived a couple weeks ago... 7000 miles by boat, and got here without a scratch on it. I guess it really depends on the freight company. Please continue to keep us updated with your progress. Nice "shed" BTW

It's got a 1JZ-GTE motor in it ... All stock for now. If I decide to keep it, I'll probably drop in a 2JZ. I've got similar fitment issues with the PS reservoir (need to find a smaller one that fits in the available space) and air filter assy. I must say the Tech2 hood really does look good in person

Thanks guys. I wish I had more time to devote to it. Dyno #'s were posted months ago. Beyond that, it will be a while before I have it at a track.

xlawcock,
Wow glad to see someone from Guam! I used to live there too and moved to Frisco about 6 months ago so I can get an FD...and of course school HAHA. Where do you stay in Guam? I've only seen 3 FD's there and a chick drives one who happens to be my cousin's neighbor, I'll be down there in summer I should check out your ride.
Well to the topic of 2JZ's dammit!!! Now I'm even having a harder time to choose from a 20B or the 2JZ! I've always loved the 3-rotor but I hate the cooling issues but when I imagine saying that I have a 2JZ in my FD sounds fraeggin awesome + reliability is there! But damn I'd really like to know if it keeps the balance 50/50 when you swap to a 2JZ...I know an LSxx swap will...as I'd like to be able to drift/autocross and not have to worry about curving corners.

There are 6 or 7 FDs on the island and only 1 or 2 that are actually running. I decided to go with the JZ motor because of its bullet-proof reputation (and the fact that I work at the local Toyota dealer). I'm so close to having this thing driveable, but its hard for me to stay focused with so many toys that want attention.
If you missed this, here's a link to another JZ swapped FD which the owner describes as "predictable" "well balanced" and "Linear" after having track tested it. https://www.rx7club.com/canadian-forum-42/project-complete-1jz-gte-powered-fd3s-783533/
As you know, Guam only has a drag strip as of now, so thats where I'll be.

Yup yup, I know what your talking about, there's a lot of rust buckets back in Guam...it is an island:P What I meant though was that I only saw 2-3 ppl that actually drive around with their FD. I don't even know how they do it since Guam so hella hot!
So wow I'm impressed your doing a 2JZ swap in Guam?! Are you going to do it yourself cuz as far as I know shops there suck! Rob from pineapple racing use to work there and we were talking about how sad it is that no one is willing to build motors there. Oh and thanks for the link! I read it and...dammit I think I'm sold to the 2JZ now....but that thread was from a 1JZ which is different in weight (lighter than the 2JZ) and torque (Higher than the 2ZJ). So I'm not too sure how a 2JZ will handle. But either way a 1JZ or a 2JZ is a hell lot cheaper than a 20b! I figure if all goes well I think I'll be done in 9 months...I will miss my rotary though...
Oh and another thing...Guam does have auto crossing doesn't it?

it was a fri. night street tire races. the track wasnt preped and it took 3/4 of the night for them to get the lights working.
2.8 60ft
12.9xx 1/4
117 mph
i got out of it everytime at the top of 4th gear (i was in 4th before the 1/8) with 100yards left in the 1/4 bc tires were spinning so bad. if i knew the track was going to be that bad i wouldnt have even gone.
jerod macoy a friend of mine took some video. ill have him email it to me and get it posted soon.

The fact that you were in 4th gear before the 1/8 mile is most likely due to your gearing more than the spinning. You have the v160 6spd with factoy FD rear right? Maybe a Cobra rear with a higher gear would help with that.

ill agree. if the track was preped it would have hooked up much better and i wouldnt have had to shift so soon. it was blowing the tires off in 4th gear. it doesnt even do that on the street.
after i post the video you will see how slow i came out of the hole and then hear the tires spin. with a good track/traction/tires i feel the car is good for low 11's the way it sits. maybe faster? those numbers were run on a 265/18 very hard compound tire. but that wont be untill next year.
over the winter im going to make a few changes to the car. cage, rear end, aem meth injection, aem twin fire... then ill push the turbo as hard as it will go.

Yes. My 1JZ FD has been a good little kitty. It feels perfectly balanced on the track. Be careful though, the approach I took to build my 1JZ FD is quite different from others, I took more of a track approach:
1. Steering rack was untouched. As matter of fact, the subframe was modified off of the stock one.
2. The firewall was pushed back 6 inches. The 1JZ sits in the engine bay in such a way that 4 cylinders are completely behind the front axles, and the remaining 2 cylinders are in front.
3. I have no power steering or air condition.
4. The battery has been relocated to the trunk.
5. A custom rear subframe (modified from stock) that supports the rear differential.
As you can see, balance was the #1 priority for me, whereas most people like to put a JZ engine in for its power.
What I'm trying to say is, don't expect that you can buy an off-the-shelf Tech 2 kit, bolt it on, and have a predictable, linear, and balanced track car, because the design concept for the Tech 2 kit is completely different from mine.
It's important to note that I'm NOT implying that the Tech 2 kit will give you a unpredictable, unlinear, unbalanced FD; the only way to find out is to track the Tech 2 set up. I'm just letting you guys know that you can't expect the same results as my 1JZ FD.
Good luck with your JZ attempts!

Sorry...no updates right now...only thing happening is that my Racing Heart wheels are being polished. It's been too cold to do anything...and time is always at a premium...
