My FD 2jz Project

I was thinking of building a LSx Rx-7 w/440ci stroker and making it a road race/fun car. However, I own a C6 w/402 stroker in it already, and I wanted something different.

I've owned numerous turbo cars and really missed the rush and sound from my old T66 Mkiv Supra (I was running 10s with my Supra back in 2001 and was on the original SupraForums with the same forum name back when Warren Chang ran it-what ever happened to him anyway?). I used to be on the top 50 quickest Supras in the country list back when running 10s in a street Supra was something...now it's nothing to run a 10...lol

Tech2Motorsports had just shown their car at Sema and were offering a full 2jz conversion that did NOT move the steering rack for the rx7 FD. Although the flip side was, that you need to use a Scoot hood, or a hood with the same clearances as the Scoot hood. By not moving the steering rack, the motor sits above the factory hood at it's highest point. Not moving the steering rack at all was the selling point for me, as I did not want to deal with bump steer correction kits, etc...And I kind of like the Scoot Hood. Besides that, they are having a custom hood made with the Scoot hood profile but without the Scoot scoop/vents, but with the rear FEED vents. It should be done in a couple of weeks.

I found a 40k mile clean title/never wrecked roller that i bought from ATSMATT here on the forums. It is a Montego Blue base model.

As with projects in general, I am already over my initial budget by much more than I want to talk about....

I just got the car back from Tech 2 last week. Gary Almond dropped off my car in fact before going to pick up one of VegasSE's new cars from LI I believe...

I did NONE of the body work on the car (YET). Apparently, the previous owner was starting to modify the body and shaved the antennae and side mirrors.

Wheels are in the basement.
It's getting a Pro EFI and tuned on Monday.

After it's tuned, I'll take some vacation time and prep and paint the car (I do my own body and paint work). All aftermarket body pieces are from Shine. Ken is a great guy.

The guys at Tech2 have been great to work with, and their fabrication work is stellar. I haven't gone through the whole car yet, but from what I have seen so far Carlos, Andrew, and the crew are TOP NOTCH.

I'll post more as the car is updated.

Roberto,
The car looks good, not to mention the Vette! I can only imagine how they drive. So you didn’t have to redo the steering rack / mod. Did you use the stock PPF (cradle)? Do you have any close up pictures? Also, what did the car peaked out at once tuned... videos, pictures?

Presently, I’m installing a 2J into my 1st Gen. But, if all goes well, I thing I’ll do the conversion in my FD as well.

Good Luck and Keep us posted.

Andre`

It will be interesting to here your opinion from driving a MKIV to an FD with the same power train.

dang

hey bro

YoshiFD3S 05-01-08 01:55 PM

I'm glad to see someone who is pleased after working with Tech2.

I've already received my 2JZ motor transplant kit from them, and I'm just waiting on the Navy to pay me some money that they owe me, so I can purchase a motor/tranny, and the other basics to go ahead and have my brother's shop actually begin performing the work.

Have you driven the car yet? I'm really curious to see what you think about the difference in power, as well as any differences in how the car handles and feels with the 2JZ in it.

As a fellow 2JZ/FD enthusiast, any owner experiences or tips/suggestions you could provide would be great!

Your car looks great, and I wish you the best! Thanks for your help.

:]

Thanks Andre. I'm following your 1st Gen build too. Tech2 built their own torque arm and does not use the PPF. I have one for sale if anyone needs it!! I'll be posting more pics soon. The car is untuned so no #s yet, I should have them next week. I've only driven it from the enclosed trailer to my house, so no driving impressions yet.

I have not driven it past bringing it into my garage. I have work to do on it yet. I will post up my experiences/pics as I get further along.

Best of luck with your project, the guys at Tech2 are great. They are professional and stand behind their products/work.

And thank you for serving our country!

Roberto,
I can only imagine the feeling under boost, considering the wheel base being shorter than the MKIV chassis.

My friend did a 20B swap in his FD and it was really sweet to drive and handle very well. Other than, his brother who did a 2J swap in an FD and it was very unstable moreso at high RPM. The difference is that he replaced the PPF which lower the motor... Interested to see how yours will handle with the steering in the stock location.

Car is very impressive... keep it coming!

1QWIK7 05-01-08 08:09 PM

Wow, that looks amazing roberto. So let me get this straight. IN order to not alter the steering, you just need to get an aftermarket hood?

WHERE DO I SIGN UP?!?! lol

Nah, other than that, what else has to be altered to have this engine sit correctly. Any removal of anything?

And i spot some jersey plates, where about are you at? I wanna see this beast in person, well both your cars man. You got 2 beasts in your possession. :)

Shabib67 05-01-08 08:15 PM

Nice project and baddass vette. Are you going to be using the 5 speed tranny? Does tech 2 have any plans of brining out a kit that will work with the getrag 6 speed?

Stage7 05-01-08 10:18 PM

[QUOTE=jimlab;8152628]Because the engine went up... way up.

100% correct.

Thanks again. Hopefully I will have more feedback regarding feel, etc this month. Right now, I'm focused on getting it tuned, body/paint, Stoptechs on, set the ride height/corner balance.

I would talk to Carlos/Drew at Tech2. I'm not missing anything with the car. Everything works, power steering, a/c, odometer, even the check engine light works (wired to the 2jz computer). I think the only thing that doesn't work is the cruise control. PM me and let me know where you are, I'm sure we can meet up sometime.

Thank you. I'm using the R154. They said they would build a kit to fit the v160 if someone wanted to pay for it. It wasn't that important to me for my target power levels. You would also most likely want to get the 6speed rear for the high gear ratio in it.

dbragg 05-01-08 10:38 PM

ill be watching this

Viking War Hammer 05-02-08 12:43 PM

That's going to be a fun car.

Juiceh 05-02-08 03:01 PM

Holy cow. I know you said the Engine is taller than the hood at the highest point but from some angles it looks like the turbo is higher up than the engine! Can't wait to see dyno vids and sheets and to hear your driving impressions.

Where the hell have you been? This is ancient news. :wallbash:

Ha! You are correct it is higher than the center of the motor. It's no where near as high as the angle in that pic looks like though. It fits under the scoot hood profile, but the turbo will hit the Scoot side vents (they stick down in the engine compartment). The hood Tech2 made does not have any of the Scoot vents. Only the Scoot profile/shape/clearance with FEED rear vents. It should be done soon.

If not, I will have to rock the Supra T6 hood mods (cut out for turbo)...lol. I do not want to give up my Full-Race manifold. There are other manifolds place the turbo lower though if it was that big of an issue.

silver_7 05-05-08 08:01 PM

Sweet setup..was the swap cost the same as the ls1 swaps or more?

txturbogs 05-08-08 03:45 PM

Nice, if you don't mind me asking....how long did it take and how much did you pay?

Sir-PSychedelic 05-09-08 03:39 PM

i want to know how the handling is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D
