there are both types, the pre '67 models years were all 6 volt systems, '67 and newer are 12 volt systems. it is quite common to find the earlier cars already converted to 12 volt, since it is a very simple process. *most* say its ok to run the 6 volt starter on 12 volts, such as KEP says:

The reason i ask is im building a off roader at the moment and was feeding 12v into the starter and solinoid with the on the weekend with jumper leads and it wasnt turning overly fast, enough to evenuallly start it but not till three or four full turns.

Im going home to have another look in the end of the starter as stated earlier in the thread, but is there any more tricks i can try??

 

check your connections, most of these cars are still using the original ground strap, they get shredded and dissipate over time. also check your battery connections them selves, and PLEASE make sure they arent touching the bottom of the seat, that horsehair **** catches fire REAL easy. [dont ask how i know]

oh, and always have a fire extinguisher with you in any vw you own/drive!

Well,i have been going at it for about 2 years now.

Update :

I decided to ditch the stupid header ,and 3" piping over the gearbox.Its just making my old,taking time,and causing annoying problems the whole time.

If all goes well,it will be going for a full custom exhaust the weekend.

I first need to build an A-frame,so that i can tow it behind the diesel.hahaha
