Hey, quick question.. when performing a 13b or any rotary bug, what transmission do you bolt to it? Cant seem to grasp that part. Also doesnt the VW engine spin the opposite direction?

The radiator is mounted in the front spare tire area.

The trans depends on the power being put down.
You can run the stock bug trans, bus trans, porsche, berg 5 speed, etc etc etc.

Me I'll be running a built type I from a super beetle.

Much or any fabrication required for the bolt up?

The motor itself with the kennedy adapter bolts right up and is probably the easiest part. The upgraded trans mounts require some work, the exhaust requires custom work. The cooling system is probably the hardest part, figuring out where and how to run your lines and radiator.

Check out this conversion:

And the forum:

I plan on using the super beetles spare tire well as my radiator scoop/mount and
maybe running the cooling lines inside the heater channels. Time will tell!

I could stand the radiator up and cut the back of the spare tire well out like the front again cover with heavy wire. Then kinda dome or box the radiator, which would solve where the hot air would go and would fix what happens if I run though a water hole. :-k

Halo there Guys.

Holiday season is over,so back to the grinding board!

I managed to get some work done over the last few weeks.

I`am currently busy sorting out the wiring.damb, what a mess!!!!after 34 years everything is half assed done.

The oil cooler brackets are done, and its fitted.

Finished all of the Block off plates. In the end I decided to make them out of Alu,it just looks so much nicer!Feels good not having to use all the Emissions crap. Saves allot of Weight too.

I installed the fuel lines. Some nice 10mm lines.Allso finished installing the fuel pump, busy with the wiring of it.

The 5" Rev Counter is in,and all the lights and stuff on it works like it should.
This morning I ordered my set of Lenso Rims. They should be here in a few weeks, probably in the first week of February if all goes well. They are 15” ,and 7” wide. The idea is to bring back the good old days of BBS ,and Compomotive wheels use on the track cars in the 80`s. Will be fitted with a set of super sticky Dunlop Sp Racers ,or otherwise Marangoni Zetas.
Here is a pic of the enginebay with the huge Mitsubishi Truck alternator with oversized pulley.Allso visable is the oil cooler, and the neat oil cooler line I had made up.The manifold is more shiny now than it was on the pic.Put some more effort into it.
I decided that I will be using ALu pipe for the water,as opposed to mild steel. That will be coming in the next week or so.

Due to testing a manifold mod, I can't finish mine until I get another project running first. Fortunately all it has to do is run (the other project). I'd like to drive it but it doesn't have brakes. The brake job will come after the baja is running.

Hi.

Welcome to the Forum!

For now my engine is only bolted to the gearbox via the adaptor.Later on i will make some braces that will attach to the chassis with rubber mountings.

If you dont trash it,the stock beetle mounts should be fine, but i dont want to take the risk

Thanks guys! I was wondering if running the motor without the mounts would damage the seals in between the plates, mess with the eccentric shaft bearing clearance, or over stress the long bolts that hold the block together. I mean... do you think it would hurt to drive it lightly before fabbing the mounts?

Btw, congratulations to both of you on your progress!

Now it wont damage the engine if driven lightly.

The highest stress points will be where the engine bolts to the adaptor.

Dont worry about the internals of the engine, they will be fine.

I am a very interested newbe. My '72 VW is body-off in my garage and I am trying to come up to speed on which is the best RX7 to transplant (turbo? twin turbo?). I am looking forward to picking up some knowledge and picking some brains.

Thanks for the vote of confidence!

I hope to be off help,so feel free to ask away.Jeff knows his Rotary beetles, and he pops in regularly if i cant answer.

I dont have any real updates to give at the moment Guys.We have been having rain for the last 2 weeks every day...to top that we have been having power cuts."load shedding"they switch off the power in all the areas for a certain time of the day.Our nuclear generator cant keep up with the demand these days. So guess what?I cant work on the beetle,as i dont have blinking light!!!VERY FRUSTRATING!!!!!

Hi Guys,

I have been making some slow progress on the project.

I got the water pipes a few days ago (alu). Will start on fitting them soon.

I finished the wiring for the Ignition system today, now i just need 2 coils, and some plug wires!

Further i also cut the holes in the glovebox lid so that i can mount the gauges.Just needs to be sprayed, and then the gauges can go in.

I`am finally getting some more money now,so i can buy the wheels, and try and finish up this old puppy!

Thanks for all the nice comments, and the encouragement!Much appreciated!

So i decided to ditch the idea of importing rims from overseas,as the backlog is over 4 months long.My brother gave me a ring yesterday, and told me that he still owed me some money.

So we agreed that i could have his set of nice lightweight 15" rims.

So i present to you!The beetle with front wheels on!

I can has like wheels!

Please tell me what you think

Karis

Psarnit, those nice cross drilled GTI discs look minute now!!!
