I had an article clipped from Motortrend? or maybe one of the other contemporary magazines from 1987 or 88 that talks about Mazda creating one or more magazine test FC's car's with 3rotor's not sure if they are 20B's or the previous generation of 3 rotor engine.

Its also mentioned in the book Mazda Rx7 from 1994

the new 7 yet? I heard people see em' floating around but
they're all artist interps and photochops.

That would be only when there is enough of a buyer market for a motor that gets 15mpg. And with gas prices, I'm seriously concerned for the rotarys future. My biggest concern right now is to have Mazda perfect a well working hydrogen or other alt. fuel source engine...

You'll get the power IF they decide to go through with the forced induction they're still experimenting with. But then that would probably defeat the purpose of what they're aiming for: A quick, fun rotary car under 30k. A turbo rotary would definitely not be priced under 30k, but rather at or slightly over it.

N/A 20B Renisis should be put in!
Use 3-plugs and direct injection. That would give at least 280bhp with better mileage.

If that is the case, I hope they would do two versions. NA and turbo, like the Supra, Z and 3000gt were in the 90s.

I just thought about something, at least with the new 16x we aren't out-displaced by the Hayabusa and ZX-14 anymore

Mazda is first releasing an N/A version, but a turbo version may follow. If they dont I hope bolt-on turbos wont be a nightmare like they are for FCs

Why are bolt-on turbo's for the FC a nightmare? I thought it seemed simple, get turbo, and bolt on? Or are you talking about turbo'ing an N/A?

Removing the turbo and such isn't too bad... Like any car, you gotta take some **** off, to get where you need to.

I'll believe it when I see it...

We really do not need enormous amounts of horsepower to make the next-generation RX-7 go fast. Two other approaches will yield better results.

1. "To go faster, add lightness," said Colin Chapman, and it is true. Lessen the weight of the car and the increased power-to-weight ration automatically makes it faster.

The supreme example, of course, is the Ariel Atom. The top version right now has 300 horsepower. With only 1300 pounds to push along, the Atom is faster than any other production car in existence, save the $1.4 million Bugatti Veyron, which can only just keep even with the Atom 300.

2. Capture more of the horsepower the engine is already making. What do I mean by that? One method of capturing more horsepower is through, not turbocharging, but through turbocompounding. The rotary engine already makes plenty of horsepower. We siimply must be more efficient in capturing it and transferring it into motive power at the wheels.

They say that the new 16X engine wil make between 200 to 250 horsepower. That figure is only the current one-time, mechanical capture of horsepower. If we capture horsepower with mechanical means and with turbocompounding, the amount could easily increase to 400 horsepower or more.

Also, remember, with turbocompounding, we are using no more gasoline than the normally-aspirated engine. Turbocompounding adds either no, or very little, stress to the engine. The result: great reliability. So we and Mazda can claim a huge ecological and economy victory, with huge horsepower, sterling reliability and excellent fuel economy. Everyone wins! :-)

Buzz :-)

guys the R&T hp figures for the 16X are wrong!

current Renesis dynos 180whp on average, 190whp for some healthy ones and it's capable of over 200whp with intake, exhaust, ignition and tuning. Factory tuning is crazy for NA at 10:1 afr's to keep the cat converter temps down!

Some modified NA RX-8's have dynoed 210-220whp with stock ports.

StarMazda series, which are factory stock short blocks with different intake and exhaust and ecu are rated at 240hp to the flywheel.

Mazda is aiming for a 20% overall improvement with the extra displacement and direct injection, so 215-230whp factory power and nearly 280whp with aftermarket components and tuning may be possible...

Also, I agree with adding "lightness": Ariel Atom, Lotuse Elise and Exige, etc. Another benefit of a lightweight car is better gas mileage!
