The FD Restoration - $$$$ Damnit
#105
Finally got the bumper fitted and I got it pretty lined up considering it isn't an OE bumper. Got it sanded down for paint too. Removed the front windshield and found some rust. Good thing I did remove it, but I need to get piano wire to remove the rear and not damage it. Damaged the front, but I was going to replace it anyways since I got it sand blasted driving behind Apex at the last coast drive I did. A032Rs like to throw rocks, hehe.

Well, finished spot welding the chassis and put new 3M seam sealer on the interior cabin. I also finished the bondo. Rolled it over to the paint area to start the process of paint. Was able to get the interior painted, but Tyler the painter found out that the definition of Etching primer was lost in translation between PPG and the rest of the paint manufacturers out there. PPG's etching primer is an adhesive promoter and etching primer to other manufacturers is just that etching primer, something you can sand to find the unseen/unfelt low spots in the body. So here's my baby all prep and ready to get her first layer on and the tailor has the wrong fabric. ****!!

Well FUBAR, found out I missed a step in the paint/body work process. The PPG rep said I need to lay down this PPG etch primer before I put on the bondo. He said I will see rust when I remove all my bondo work. Good stuff, I want to do it right so off it goes.
However, I spent the day tuning John's (Apex) car today. Jesus he was running pig rich - 6.5 - 7.5 AFR. Got it up to 10.0 - 11.5 depending on throttle/load. Noticable increase in power, hehe. On our last full throttle run to 8K one of the coolant lines burst. Good stuff to happen in the middle of nowhere. Here we are with big *** smiles on our face, steam coming out of the engine bay, then comes a cop rolling by, we wave like tourist, he gives us a look like we're up to no good and keeps driving by. We were able to drive it back after filling it up again and having the radiator cap half on so it's wouldn't build pressure. Fixing it tomorrow for Mondays track day at PIR.

Oh no..I drove it back to the shop at about 1 pm, and had the motor to Rob at 4 pm. Spyder and I each took a hit of crack and went crazy on it. (That includes a Napa trip, tear down and delivery to Rob's place out at the airport...in rush hour traffic!)
Rob will be calling me today to tell me the damage..You can tell the front rotor chipped a seal though. Looks like I had wire failure on the fron rotor, leading plug that caused the issue. When we took it off, the inside of the plug wire boot was all zapped and melted. Also the rear plugs were VERY worn vrs the fronts. It's amazing how freaking fast the thing was though..even well before it blew up. It will live again...this will be my last go around though..If it craters with in the next year I'm done. play taps now........

Youll feel alot better when the body work is done, alot better. My dad just did a full restore on a '55 Chevy Delivery...took him a long time to get the body work done on it because the further in he dug, the more defects he found. Its all painted and pretty now, and he can concentrate on the fun stuff...engine/drivetrain.
