If you put it on the thermostat cover, you'll have the wrong temperature readings until ~182F when the thermostat opens. I've seen them installed on the front of the water pump, which is nice since the pump can be removed for the install.

The 2nd gen FAQ has links to threads which discuss water temp sensor locations. There are many.

give them this part number 8569-18-510A i personally know autozone doesnt list this as one of the coolant temp sensors. they should have it though or can get in a couple days.

as long as its behind the thermostat meaning in the block your good, id say drill a hole right next to the stock sensor if you cant get the old one out

Copied and pasted directly from the 2nd gen FAQ:

Where do I install the sensor for my aftermarket temperature gauge?
There has been lots of discussion about where to mount water temp sensors/senders. The best location is on the water pump housing near the stock ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature) sensor. Drill and tap according to the threads on your sensor (usually 1/8" NPT). It is important this this sensor be installed before the thermostat. See the following topics for more information:

i put mine in one of the existing pipe threaded holes in the back of the w/p housing, right under the t-stat.
