180-210F is normal
220-250 something's up
over 250 you're pretty much fooked

stock guage is useless

drilling and tapping the water pump housing is best, you get temps even the t-stat is closed.

I would argue that the wp pump housing is not the best. I put my sensor in the stock location on the block since that is the hottest point in the entire coolant system. I dont even have my stock temp gauge connected since it sucks anyways. With the sensor in the block I can see when the tstat opens and the with a accurate gauge can immediately see any fluctuations in temperature. If you want to keep the stock gauge I would recommend putting your aftermarket sensor in at the block and then drill/tap into your wp housing and put the stock sensor there.

Wherever you decide to put it just make sure you know what temperature it should be relative to its location. I dont recommend putting it anywhere after the tstat since there is a possibility it could give you inaccurate readings.

The stock gauge does not suck, unless it is S5. The S4 gauge is actually quite good, but a little slow in the response time.

Summit Racing sells all kinds of digital gauges. But be aware that digitals are harder to read at a glance.

Best place for the sender in in the water pump/thermostat housing. Many possible locations. Just make sure to pick a spot BEFORE the thermostat, so you will still have a temp reading if your thermostat fails closed.

You're probably right (after all, that's where Mazda though was best), but there are few aftermarket gauges with sensors that fit in the stock location, and using an adaptor to make it fit is a bad idea as it spaces the sensor out of the coolant flow.

Unless you're lucky enough to find a gauge that fits the stock location, the back of the water pump under the thermostat is the best place.

I have this in my car:

http://www.pegasusautoracing.com/Pro...asp?RecId=2492

Reads water temp and oil temp on one display. It comes with two senders and a wiring harness. Buy a spare sensor ($50) because they fail sometimes. You'll know when it fails because the reading will go all wacky. I disagree with AAron, when I had an analog gauge I would always misread it when glancing unless it was right on one of the marked numbers. With a digital you can read it instantly.

My blitz electric water temp gauge was 1/8" NPT and fit right in the stock location. I also have an s5 so I can say the stock temp gauge sucks. The stock temp sesor location is to the left of the oil pressure sender.

EDIT: About the temps, my car runs normally at 82* C (180*F) which is normal operating temp. Sometimes when pushing it I get up to about 87*C (190*F) but never higher, except after I shut off my car (raises to 90* C or 194* F). This is with the greddy fmic and a koyo rad with all stock ducting and stock clutch fan.

I have mine before the thermostat. . i know not the best place for it but it works. It's actually right on with the stock gauge i feel. Anyways i have mine on the thermostate housing neck. (filler neck also) If you look at the filler neck you will see that there is a spot that looks it was cast to have a temp sender unit there. Well that's where mine is located. We drilled and taped that location and it works great thus far. All i have for a gauge is a shitty *** sunpro or wahtever VIP sells and it is shitty but it works, i'll be getting a better one in the future. Anyhow that's how i have mine run.

Ask the seller what sender the gauge expects. Looks like he is marketing it to Honda owners, which means it may be calibrated to work with the Honda sender (available at any wrecking yard or Honda dealer). However, for about $5 more, you can get a much nicer looking gauge from Summit Racing, complete with sender and wiring. Summit's house brand is cheap, or you can get "Cyberdine".

Sender locations are in the factory service manual.

Are you serious? Go to http://www.summitracing.com . On the left, search the catalog for "cyberdine", "temperature gauge", etc.

I mean, you could put in some minimal effort. Or at least spell my name correctly if you are asking for a favour...

You mean temp sender...

It's not about whether it works (it'll work fine), but about what happens if the thermostat fails. If it sticks closed, there won't be any flow past the sender. So as the engine cooks itself, the gauge will actually be reading cold. The temp gauge is supposed to show any temp-related problems, and in this location it won't.

...Most of them come with the sender... at least new ones do. Ok I take that back, in my experience in the past, new ones come with senders. Looks like summit lists them seperatly though:

Summit# sum-g2984 gauge ($30), sum-g2988 sender ($10.95)

or cyberdyne gauges through summit, summit p/n # cyba220e060n syberdyne gauge with hi/lo function ($49.95). summit pn# cyb-senss6e sender ($15.95)

That eBay gauge looks pretty decent. Certainly not my style, but if that's what you are looking for, it should do the job.

The Cyberdyne gauges at Summit require you to purchase the sender. According to my paper Summit catalogue, the Cyberdyne sender is CYB-SENSS6E and is $15.99

Summit also has their house brand of digital gauge. Part number SUM-G2984 for water temp, and SUM-G2988 for the sender.
