Help! Can’t turn key (S4 1988)

So, I somehow managed to set the alarm off last night. Although I turned it off I guess by locking and unlocking all the doors and rear hatch. I couldn’t turn the key afterwards. I came back today and after messing around with the locks again, still can’t get the key to turn past lock onto ACC or start. The car is an 88 GTU with no power locks.

P.S. I noticed that when I fully turn the door locks fully counter clockwise (open), the security light on the center console turns on, but doesn’t blink. I also removed an aftermarket radio a little bit before the alarm went off. No radio plugged in at the moment but pretty sure I started the car once before alarm went off without radio

help please!!

Update: was able to start the car by turning the locked steering wheel back and forth while jiggling/turning the key. Not sure if it was related to the alarm to begin with.

This happens when you park with the wheels cut.

When the steering wheel lock engages you will have to turn the wheel one way or the other while turning the key to get the wheel to unlock and the ignition switch to fully turn.

This is not something special to the RX7. As far I can remember every car I've even been in does this...

Is this not a thing anymore on modern cars?

any car or truck that has the key cylinder in the steering column will do this. if the wheel is turned slightly when the lock engages, it puts pressure against the locking pin mechanism making it difficult to turn the key. turning the wheel slightly one way or the other releases the pressure against the locking mechanism allowing the key to turn. it's nothing new to us older guys that have had this happen.
