Arrow Don't know much! Need your help! Lots of questions from Noob!

Hey, My names Tyler. I bought a 1979 Mazda RX-7 I'm not sure whats wrong with it yet seeing as I have not got it running yet. I bought it May 1st and slowly have been working on it and buying cosmetic's for it, first I took the carb off it and made it squeaky clean, I bought a battery and it was idling at 6000rpm, someone from the site told me to adjust the throttle cable and before I could do that my nephew left the switch for the fuel pump on and it drained my battery. (the guy I got it off lost the keys and made it a push button, with a switch for the accessories. and I plan on moving it and hiding as soon as I put her on the road)

The reason I'm making this post is I just wanna know absolutely everything about this car..
Mine has leather, any others I have seen have cloth seats, is mine a special model??
What engine does the 79 have in it?
How do I tell how many times the KM have rolled over? it says 45xxxKM right now but I'm not sure how much of that is right.
What is the fastest it will go?
Did they originally come with power steering?
Can I drop the 13B or the Renesis rotary motor on this tranny or will I have to buy a new transmission?
How hard is it to turbo a rotary??
People always tell me that the rotary likes be be driven hard and fast (suits me very well), is the engine strong enough to handle octane boost or NO2????

If you know anything about this year and stuff please fill me in on everything I need to know about this car, Its my first car and its a totally new engine I never touched before in my life so I would love absolutely any tips or stories about your rotary!!! they will all help in the long run

to answer your questions, i'll include a response after each question:

Mine has leather, any others I have seen have cloth seats, is mine a special model??- the 79 model year RX-7's did not have leather as an option. the only SA (79-80) to offer leather was the 1980 Leather Sport. your seats have either been reupholstered or swapped.

What engine does the 79 have in it?- the engine that comes with the car from the factory is a 70cid 12A two rotary rotary engine developing 100hp at 6K rpm and 105lbs/ft torque at 4K rpm.

How do I tell how many times the KM have rolled over? it says 45xxxKM right now but I'm not sure how much of that is right.-there's no good answer for this. my guess would be that its rolled over once and its 145k/KM. condition of the vehicle and overall wear will clue you in to this.

What is the fastest it will go?-overall condition will determine the top speed. when new, the top speed was 122mph

Did they originally come with power steering?-NO. not until 84 when power steering was an option on the GSL and GSL-SE

Can I drop the 13B or the Renesis rotary motor on this tranny or will I have to buy a new transmission? -use the search function and read the 1st gen FAQ

How hard is it to turbo a rotary??- -use the search function and read the 1st gen FAQ

People always tell me that the rotary likes be be driven hard and fast (suits me very well), is the engine strong enough to handle octane boost or NO2????- tired rotaries do not like ot be run hard. octane boost and NO2 are NOT recommended. the 12A will run on 87 octane and 87 is recommended as higher grades of fuel will do nothing for performance on a stock engine.

get rid of the fuel pump switch and rewire the pump correctly and do the same with the ignition. both are easy fixes. post some pics of your car when you get time. when you do we will be able to tell you much more about it.

Thank you so much! lots of helpful information ... there isn't a spot of rust anywhere on her, she is in really good shape just needs a lot of little things, I'm gonna buy a body kit and try to get rid of the point in the front, get a new dash board and put racing seats into it. I will post pictures as soon as I find my camera. it doesn't look like the car was hardly ever driven, the tires are old but are basically brand new at like 95% tread, I'm gonna buy a pick-up truck and wont bother taking this out in the winter, the whole RWD thing sketches me out and I think I'm gonna get antique plates on it and just use it as a date/show car when I get done with it. Other then that I need a truck for work and play, a little sports car wont tow a boat unfortunately.. Any other useful tips about this car you can give me, common mistakes and problems. even some uncommon ones to I wanna know everything there is to know about this beauty Its just a diamond in the rough right now

Then read the threads in the Archive section then read the FAQ (Frequently asked questions), then download a copy of your year FSM (Factory Service Manual) from the link in my signature.

You need to crawl before you can walk then you can graduate to running after you do a lot of research and reading of the material that we already have available to you. :-)

Get yourself a FSM if you haven't already. (Rx7Doctor has a link to them in his signature.)
Check for rust in the rear wheel wells by checking behind the storage bins behind the seats. This is a pretty common rust area.
Search for the rest. There are so many topics on your questions...

there are no storage bins on 79-80 models. the bins were not added until 81. the locks and lights in the bins were not added until 84.

Okay, I'm going to give you a little bit of advice here:

1. Show the senior members a bit of respect. They have been here a very long time, and have assisted many people over the years. They deserve that respect, especially from somebody who comes here asking for their help.

2. Learn to write a decent post. If you can't ask a decent question, or give a good description, then how can we possibly help you?

3. Correct spelling helps us to understand what you are asking.

4. You don't walk into a room full of experienced people, ask for their help, and then spit on their shoes. That is pretty much what you just did. I would advise you to apologize to Sgt. Fox.

That is my advice to you. You can take it or leave it. Whether or not you recieve any help or further advice from me will depend on your response...
