adding a turbo to a n/a rx7

Ok i have never done this before but i go to school and i been working on cars for about 15 years now.

What would be the best way to tackle this.
I am thinking of turbocharger a N/A rx7 it has 83k on the motor i get great oil pressure and everything works great except the valves in the intake.

I don't want to rebuild this motor or swap for a turboed motor. All i want to do is install a turbo kit increase some power and drive around town thinking i'm the ****.

What would be the things to consider like upgrading the feul pump or pan tapping for oil hose for turbo and what not.

If anyone can break down what needs to be done or have the done it. Let me know thanks guys

There are no turbo kits for the NA RX-7. Anything you do will need to be custom. You can either make your own turbo manifold and continue to use the NA intake manifolds, or install the TII intake manifolds by port matching so that you can use any turbo manifold designed for the TII.

See the 2nd gen FAQ for details.

Are the intakes on any 86-91 rx7 inter changeable. I don't like the one i have. Its like the S shape one where the intake throttle body faces the passenger side. I'd post pics but not sure how to or it wont let me

Any information would help.

You don't "like" the intake? You're aware that the shape of the intake is dictated by the runner length, tuned to work with the 6 port induction system, right?

With some work, you can swap the newer '89 - 92 NA intake onto your car if it is an S4 (86 - 88) but in general, the gains are only a few HP at the very top end on an S4 engine. Then you need to figure out a way to control the VDI actuator. Generally I'd say it isn't worth the work because much greater gains can be made by simply upgrading the exhaust. Then the next big step without opening the engine is to actually tune it, requiring a change in ECU. Those are the big gain items on an NA until you get into porting.

Use the search button or look around the forum. This has been covered a ton of times already and there are a bunch of write ups on it. You will need to do alot of work and itd be easier for you to swap the 13bt drivetrain in instead of trying to turbo the n.a engine.

You gain 14hp with the newer intake

i would do a compression test on the motor before turbocharging it. it would be easier just to swap the t2 engine in.

easier to just swap in a t2 engine and getting a t2 drivetrain.

forgot to post your write up bro

http://www.aaroncake.net/rx-7/naturbo1.htm

i also read, somewhere on this forum, that you could use the t2 intake manifolds, haltech, turbo etc to boost a n/a. can someone verify this? I would think the 5th and 6th ports would have to be blocked off somehow unless the manifold already does it.

Turbo intake manifold modification here http://www.aaroncake.net/rx-7/4PortLIMTo6Port.htm Stock turbo and manifold just bolts onto the block. You need coolant and oil supplies for the turbo as well as a more advanced engine management system like the haltech. Just search around for the other mods necessary.
