Red face 1990 Vert Engine Bay Questions - First Post

Hey all, I guess this is sort of an introduction, but I also have a couple of questions.

I typed this up once already before realizing I was posting in the main tech section where I can't post yet so here we go again

This is my first (second?) post, so it's likely that it won't be worded as eloquently as intended, but I just had a few questions about options I have when putting my engine back in my car once it's rebuilt.

First some info about the car:

It's a 1990 s5 vert with a 6-port NA 13b that as of right now is completely stock.
The car will soon be delivered to Banzai Racing in Indiana where the engine will be completely refreshed.
As it sits now, pretty much the entire engine harness has be converted into squirrel food, so it is due for a rewire, and I am looking into options for a custom harness so that I can do a full wire tuck, as my plans for this car are to be show spec.
I am also sitting on a few pretty neat parts like a genuine type 1 BN kit imported from Japan, fenders made by Blake Olsen, Work Equip 05's that are also currently being rebuilt, and full air suspension (sacrilege I know...)
I'd like to weld in trailer fenders to add tubs so that I have more inner wheel clearance, and with this like I said, I'd like to tuck the wires.

So down to the real question!...
What in the engine bay is possible to get rid of (or replace) that makes cleaning up the engine bay easier? I've seen multiple people switch over to AN lines and electric radiator fans, but I'd like if possible to also keep the AC working as I do plan on driving the car as well. I've also seen some people switch over to electric power steering, but honestly I wouldn't even know where to begin with that, so any advice is also appreciated. Another totally foreign subject to me is the carbureted vs injected argument, but I've seen multiple people switch from injected to carbureted. Is there anything else that I am missing that could be deleted? Also, would I be better off switching to an aftermarket ems? I am honestly unsure, but would love to hear feedback and opinions!

Thanks in advance for any help that you have to offer!

welcome to the board, Cobey.

well, my first thought is if you're going to be working with Banzai for the engine, then you may want to run some of questions by them as well.

here are my thoughts on your questions:

1. i have no input when it comes to wire tucking. i like a clean engine bay, but i was never really big on cutting perfectly good wires just to achieve a "clean" look. you mentioned your harnesses are in ratty shape (pardon the pun ) so i suppose your harnesses are not perfectly good, but either way, i don't have useful information or guidance for you.

2. AN lines are fairly easy. to do. i know they have dress-up kits out there, but since you mentioned "show spec" i inferred you plan to enter shows with it, in which case, you'll probably want to do the rea; deal. i know the fuel system and oil cooler lines are easy. i've done those, but i don't know what you'd need to do the cooling system. getting an answer fo this is really just a matter of asking the right person. i've seen quite a number of cars from Australia with AN coolant lines, so it might be just a matter of sending a PM or posting in the right sub-forum.

2a. the two things about the radiator fans you need to keep in mind are the flow rate and if it's reliable. i don't know what the preferred candidates are for FCs right now is, but it shouldn't be too hard to find when you're ready.

3. now, on to the engine, you can strip the engine down completely if you wish. how far you go is completely up to you. you said you want to keep the A/C, and that's fine. when it comes to controlling it, that will be up to you and your budget. setting cost aside, i would imagine the main factor of the OEM ECU and aftermarket EMS would be pre-programmed vs. a blank slate. are you good enough with wiring and computers to re-wire the stock system and satisfy things that it may need to run the engine correctly, that you may have wanted to delete (or prematurely deleted)? i can't say for sure, but i don't think it's all that flexible. personally, i don't like the stock unit, so it was one of the first things that went on my car. however, a standalone comes with costs aside from the initial purchase, so you need to think long, and hard, before doing it. you have to wire the car anyway, so that's something else to consider as well.

carburetor vs. EFI? keep the EFI it's more adaptable, so if you decide to make changes down the road, it's simply a matter of retune (and maybe new fuel parts).
