i'd have to agree with all those things on your list
but i was referring to pele's claim that using mechanical guages is not a smart thing to do
the only thing "un-smart" about my incicent was me... it was operator error ...
i meant to post this here, but completely forgot in all the hustle and bustle at work this week:
so the last few months with the turdrolla have been...painful...so to speak. my steering has been completely fubar - the best description i can give is my steering wheel (and entire front end, before i figured out what it was) was shaking like a cold chihuahua on crack. it was getting so i didn't want to drive anywhere, because i was broke and couldn't afford the (expensive) diagnosis and repairs...nevermind the fact that it put me in physical pain from all the vibrations if i drove for too long. i'd taken it in to Toyota awhile ago to figure out a random clunking in my front end, which they diagnosed to be the inner tie rod ends. i figured OK, that's probably what's causing it.
nope. changed both inner and outer tie rod ends, and after a good $500 spent on that repair it still shook. finally took it back over to toyota on Tuesday night (my buddy Steve is one of their employees), and we checked my entire suspention, as well as balanced my wheels, etc. it turns out i somehow have 2 wheels that are out of round. i have no idea how i've managed this, as i drive the car like it's made of glass when i go over bumps.
on the upside, however, i managed to get my sway bars in, as well as clean off my rear brakes and adjust the drum shoes so i actually have a functioning ebrake now. hopefully this tuesday we'll have time to install my rear springs (i've only had the front lowered), get a replacement brake kit on the driver side since mine's fubar, and replace one wheel stud that was broken a week ago from someone cross threading it a good 4-5 months ago.
the downside: i'm out $450 for a repair that we could have done on our own, and would have cost me just $150 for parts.
the upside: next season the car's going down to FedEx for its first autox. i should have a new set of wheels with some really good tires by then (well, i hope...), so i hope to be one of the only corollas on the course. hoooray for the little red rollerskate! i think i'm going to have a lengthy chat with my roommate, who has been to FedEx on more than one occasion with his crapalier...if he can do rather well in that car, hopefully he'll have some pointers for me.
to those on whom i tried to pawn my car...i do apologize...i was just sick and tired of having pain in my arms from the drive. nope, i'm not selling her...i've gone through too much at this point and have been successful in fixing the problems, or at least know what i need to do to eliminate them.

It's not that mechanical gauges are inherently bad, but it adds one more point for fluids to leak and moves them to a place where the have no business being.
Would you really run fuel line through your passenger compartment?

You mean you replaced the tie rods, WITHOUT proper diagnosis??? And at $500 for tie rods, I hope they used lube, and took you to dinner and a movie first.

you've evidently never seen my car

yes... they HAVE electrical guages that will measure that stuff... but like gas guages its "best guess" technology... there is variance in resistors, pots, wiring linear resistance, all this effects the accuracy of the guage
my theory on technology is ... if it aint broke, dont fix it (hence why my car has a v8) mechanical pressure guages work GREAT...there is areason they are still used on all heavy machinery and locomotives and heavy abuse vehicles and machinery.
more expensive and more gizmo's != better all the time
i'll stick with my mechanical guage

had that not happened, i would have taken it down to Corey's so we could do it.
the tie rods needed replacing, however, so i'm glad to get that out of the way.

I think you need an 80 gallon Ingersoll-Rand or perhaps a trailer hitch and one of those construction air compressors to tow behind...

The vacuum from the engine might pull air in through the compressor wheel and cause the turbine side of the compressor to forcefully suck the exhaust out of the engine and push it out the exhaust...
You'll need to tap into your downpipe and put a boost gauge in there, and set up an exhaust manifold vacuum gauge.
