No water injection. My car only runs 10psi with a ducted SMIC and I'm sure the IATs are higher than normal but I've never had a problem even on 100 degree track days.

For their open track events, experience is verified during the registration process. They offer normal HPDE weekends with instructors/classroom sessions as well for drivers who aren't yet in the experienced/solo run groups but they aren't doing an HPDE at the new track this year.

 

Got you, good info here! It will probably be wise for me to do a HPDE at Summit, since I am familiar with Main and Shenny.

For HPDEs, are street tires ok? Is it normal for people to drive their vehicles to HPDEs? I really want to do one this year, but want to be as ready as possible.

 

street tires are fine. most people drive their cars there.

The only thing I'd worried about besides engine coolant/oil temps is brakes. normal street pads probably won't cut it. and you'll definitely want some sort of hi temp brake fluid.

 

+1. Stock components are generally fine for stock power levels. Do you have any mods? I ran several years with crappy Pirelli's and stock brakes. Eventually the rotors warped and I have since upgraded to DTC's which are awesome (a little too much front bias tho). If you are running over 300HP, brakes and tires may be an issue. As for cooling, stock components will kill your motor.

I'd actually be up for bringing my corolla (because I don't care if I crash it) but it ran dry on oil at an autocross a few months ago . it needs a new engine...

the RX-7 is not ready to be tracked yet on the new engine...

 

I am running a Hawk HPS, I am guessing that those wont cut it. So replacing the brake pads prior/after a track day is good idea/common? Running super blue brake fluid, but will probably replace prior/after the track day, that's the norm for the bike.

Stock engine, TO4S turbo. Whenever hitting the track, I do plan on lowering the boost to 4-5psi, that would put me way below the 300 RWHP. Not sure how much fun that would be, but given the limitations (street tires, and zero experience on a car), it will probably be the best bet.

BTW - Fellas, thanks for all of the info. I do hope to be able to hit the track in fall, and hopefully meet some of you guys there!

 

I run HP+s on my 160 hp, 2200 lb Corolla and that was just barely enough and sketchy at times...

in any FD with a semi marginal driver I'd suspect you're going to overheat HPSs or HP+s

DTCs are nice... and are ok to drive to the track with. When I tracked my FC I ran DTC60s in the front w/ HT10s in the back.

 

These cars are a blast on the track regardless of HP. That said, you want enough to keep the cars you pass in the corners behind you on the straights. I was running an old worn out stock motor (probably around 200 HP) and got tired giving people I just passed in the corners a point by in the straights then have to start all over again. 300 should be enough to keep people at bay on the straights and still be able to run street tires/brakes.

+1 on running DTCs on the street. I never seemed to have any issues (but it's more of a track car than street car). I ran DTC60 front and 30's rear which seemed to come around a little in hard braking situations. I need to either upgrade my rears or downgrade my fronts.

 

+1 for the DTCs. I swap 60s in both front and back before driving to the track. I do run a staggered wheel setup and haven't had any issues with rear lock-up. I disable ABS before going on track as it vastly increases stopping distance in a spin.

Yea, most cars drive themselves to HPDE events. Some do arrive on trailers and there are those who also swap out their street wheels/tires when they arrive. I just run what I brought; the car is on summer tires (old Dunlop Z2s) year-round.

I signed up for CDC AutoX this weekend if anyone else is interested. It looks like Rocky is on the roster as well.

I run the DTC-60s on the street to get to the track and back, but I do not use them daily. They do provide adequate stopping power when cold, but they are very noisy and will also shorten your rotor life. The optimal operating temperate of the DTC-60 is 700-1100 degrees F.

 

I have not found the DTCs that noisy. I have Ti backing plates and use ceramic brake lube. They are dusty though, but what hi performance pad isn't. Think the biggest reason not to run them on the street is they aren't cheap (think you'll wear through a couple sets of these before you wear through a rotor). Also, the high operating temps did melt my caliper piston dust boots. I am in the process of installing brake ducts. Hope that helps.

 

Heh yea, same problem. I replaced all my dust boots and a few track events later they're completely cooked. I have brake ducts and hoses but I need to fab up some proper backing plates for the rotors so I have never used them yet.

 

Anyone have any FD shifter mechanism parts they'd like to sell? I bought the "rebuild kit" from Ray for $25 plus $18 shipping only to find out after taking it apart that I'm going to need some more pieces, namely the rubber ones. My own fault for not taking it apart first to tally up exactly what I need because that $18 shipping charge really chaps my ***. I miss the days of taking a drive to Woodbridge and stopping by my favorite taqueria.

I just saw that email from Ed.. I'm strongly thinking about going. Unfortunately I'm (possibly) going to be moving myself that weekend, so I may not be able to go.

It's an event at the blue crabs stadium in Waldorf, MD put on by the local autocross group. They are a ton of fun!!

 

Depending on how my July 4th plans turn out I may be at the Waldorf event, or I may be out of town. As of now I am signed up, but things may change.

 

Well, the FD is no longer in Maryland... I just got her moved to the new house this afternoon. I neglected to take a picture, but we're going from a single car garage with about 2ft of clearance on either side of the car, and about 6-7 feet of room the long way... To a three car garage that the owner set up to have a welding station in (220v drop, and "cement board" lining a few sections of the wall).

Sooooo stoked about this!! Gunna get everything else moved by Saturday, clean up the old house on Sunday, and start working at Quantico on Tuesday. Busy busy...
