My GTUs did it when I was driving it until it was warmed up all the way. To get it to stop I would hold it at 3k for a few seconds and most of the time it would drop to 750.

i rebuilt it myself. the hardline rusted way in the back after it turns upwards to follow the body of the car, so without really getting under there and having a look-see, you never would have noticed it. the rest of the line actually looks quite good, even the flex line is in good condition, not rotted at all. we discovered the leak after finally getting the relay replaced thus making the pump work. i guess it finally built up enough pressure in the hardline to rupture the rusted portion. after trying to get it to start a few times i noticed a small puddle behind the driver side rear wheel. naturally we repaired that before attempting to start the car again. the brake line is actually also in need of repair in the same spot. it looks like the plastic spacers were actually allowing moisture to build up underneath.

anyway, remanned injectors will be here tomorrow and we'll see how it goes. also just got a remanned starter for $50 on ebay and it came with a new solenoid which i don't think it was supposed to. we'll see how THAT goes. last thing i got was a new koyo radiator to replace the old stock one. tomorrow and tuesday are going to be busy days.

I may have to re-join SCCA for next year. I just got back from their PDX at Summit this weekend and am thinking about running time trials with them next year as well as some of their FedEx autoxes. First thing's first though, gotta fix my car. Was limping it around all Sunday on the track at 1/4 throttle in the turns because the boost control wasn't... controlling.

Assuming I can fix the car, I'm thinking about signing up for the Trackdaze Oct event at Shen. if anyone's interested in going.

October is booked up for me and I want to get some more things finished on my car before I take it to a track. With all that said, I'm aiming to make it to an event out there in the spring.

I popped my engine again Sunday morning.... (wastegate didn't open, boosted to 20+ psi and cracked the rear iron less than a mile from my house.)

I was at FedEx in my corolla. I left my camera in my FC (along with all my other stuff) but I still had a blast. Glad Wes made it out and hopefully he come out more in the future

Next event at FedEx is 10/6 if anyone wants to come.

Damn Mike that is the suckiest bunch of suck that ever sucked. Do you think that's what caused the last engine to pop as well?

I don't know what engine management you're using but I had mine set to cut fuel at 3 psi over my target boost. That's the only thing that saved my motor this weekend when my precontrol failed. An old-school alternative would be to install a pop-off valve that's sprung slightly higher than what you've got your wastegate set to as a precaution.

No, the last engine popped because the vacuum line popped off my fuel pressure regulator...

I'm running megasquirt 3. I just looked at my tune and I did have overboost protection turned on... but for some reason I had it set at 17.5 psi... so that didn't help. I need to upgrade it anyway, apparently there is a bunch of safety feautes that they've added that I need to turn on.... this is getting old

on my way back from the autocross in VA beach, the circlip popped off my wastegate actuator. I didn't have the correct size replacement, so I used a slightly bigger one that was a different style that I thought would work... but as it was falling off it must have popped to the side of the actuator and pinned it closed. by the time I made it home (before I realized I had cracked the iron any my car was leaking oil everywhere) I already had no boost again just like when it popped off the first time.

a new rear iron has been ordered through mazdaspeed... this one has the FD style much thicker rear casting around the oil dowel so hopefully I should be good in the future after I fix my overboost settings :P

Bleh, never good to hear something like that. That sucks, I hope nothing else internally got damaged.

Good luck on the rebuild, at least you are getting pretty efficient at it right?

Yeah, I'm now super glad I did a last minute change to ALS "un-breakable" apex seals... if I hadn't it probably would have been an apex seal that went instead of the rear plate and cost me my new rear housing and possibly a turbo....

it was running completely fine on the way home, so I don't think I killed anything else, I didn't even realize I had broken something until I saw smoke pouring off the exhaust (that was covered with oil) and oil steaming out of the rear iron...

I didn't loose as much oil as I thought I did, so the bearings should be fine too. I have no idea what the oil pressure was like, but the rear housing crack is really small, I can't even see it...

The engine is already almost ready to be pulled. I'm going to attempt to keep the rest of the block together and just separate the rear iron which should make things much faster.

she LIVES!

turned out my starter was just shot. i don't know how the hell it was spinning at all. replaced it with a reman and it fired right up like brand freaking new. blew white smoke for about 30 seconds, then blue smoke for another couple of minutes, then i'm pretty sure the spark plugs were so fouled with bad gas, burned oil, and burned vaseline that it idled out. we couldnt get it to start up again and after a few tries i decided to let it rest over night (ok, dinner was ready) so i'll clean the plugs tomorrow and see if i can't get a repeat performance.

oddly enough it seemed like it was in time. don't know how the hell i pulled that off other than witness marks on the CPS.

god it was nice to hear her purr again after 7 years.

If you've still got the stock pulley with clear timing marks, you can almost get the timing dead on with no light. You should double check it.

Congratulations on the big hurdle, there is nothing quite like the first start of a new engine. I hope you cracked a beer to celebrate.

Good luck with the ensuing headaches as well

Finally bit the bullet and bought an FD. '94 black, with 74k original miles on it. I had an FC for a little before, but this is a totally different monster!. I've had an issue passing emissions though, and can't get registered. The car is running too rich, and I need to get it registered so I can finally drive it legally. Does anyone know a map for the Commander that will lean me out just for emissions, or have any other help for me? Located in Fairfax, VA

Tuning starts at 500.00 bucks and does it still have an air pump on it?

Welcome, make sure to come out and meet up with us during the various events that we do in the area too. We always enjoy having more 7s around and it really helps if we know you from more then just a screen name if you are looking for help

Congrats, on the purchase. Emissions are a real pain on these cars and why more then a couple of them aren't registered and sitting in a garage. There are a couple of ways around emissions restrictions but I am going to assume that you are looking to do this legally (good for you). First question is whether you are in Md or Va. Second question is how many/which mods? Third, what tune is on there right now is it the base mod map or is it custom? Fourth is have you seen the posts from arghx about how to learn/do PFC tuning yourself? Here's an example https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generati...needed-841706/, IIRC, there is a tuning guide booklet or something that Chuck Westbrook used to sell (not sure if it is still available, its been a while since I've looked into that stuff). If you don't trust yourself to learn and complete the adjustments (or have more money then the time/effort) I would take it to a shop to tune it the way you want it. You may want this anyway so that you at least know that it has a good tune and not something someone slapped together.

I'll go to meets once I get the car running right so I can actually drive her around. I'm thinking I may need a rebuild from what I've read on the forum and what I'm experiencing. I just got my compression tester in and I plan on using it this weekend.

Who said anything about legally? I'm in Fairfax, VA and have tried quite a few things to no success so far. The car has the stock cat and air pump, and a PFC that is apparently tuned to run rich. It's failing the sniffer test as of now and I don't want some shoddy mechanic to mess around with other stuff trying to make it pass. I'll look into tuning it but that can get pricey fast. Didn't think I'd have a headache like this right off the bat considering my NA FC was mostly issue free! But I have a great clean FD, just not legal to drive yet.
