I was drifting the GTUs on 15's that were at 60 psi. Stock steering is very limiting and it will cause you to spin on sweeping turns. If you have low power or are N/A, you just have to throw the car hard. I had a little help from Miata gears and a 4.30 rear.

You really just have to have S4 LCAs and 2 sets of ball joints, but that's probably what you meant.

if you're already modifying the ball joints/spindles you should probably add some roll center spacers too. I have a set of AWR ball joints, but you can do it by just adding more material to the knuckle too.



have you guys read this?:
Basic Drift Chassis Setup Part 1

there is some good stuff in there (it's 3 parts), along with the 8 part general chassis setup articles.

Thanks for the link Mike.
I'm low dollar so I was just going to have a set of the S4 LCA's extended at the balljoint mount.
I haven't read much about roll center adjusters, but it makes sense why they help.

The modified spindles have the tie rod mounting points shortened to allow for more steering angle, I don't know if you understood what I meant or not.

Yeah, I'm fairly familiar with the oddities of drift setups. modified spindles usually are modified to have better ackerman angles too so when you counter steer your tires are still pointed the same direction.

both the ball joints and the LCAs are cast aluminum... they probably won't be very fun to weld. I still think it would be easier just to extend the ball joint instead of the control arm though

Yeah, an extended ball joint is easier to fab, but is weaker than extending the LCA's.

I don't know if I'll pay someone to do it, or fire up the TIG welder I got a few months ago after I get gear around Christmas time.
You're my resident suspension expert, I'll just copy what you've got now. I know the ONLY reason you beat me at auto cross is because your car is set up better, it has nothing to do with the driver. :

Yup wrote by mike kojima, way worth reading. He was an editor for sport compact car, the greatest magazine that is no more :-(. I need to focus on correcting the fc's.... undesirable geometry and balance for drifting. Its low polar movement of inertia, great for grip not so much for drift. Of course i could buy a s chassis and have an easier time. Doesnt seem as rewarding, Sir Hillary didnt climb Everest because it was small lol.

Has anybody shimmed the tie rods for greater angle? You all are talking about the more extensive knuckle mod, so i assume its small potatoes.

sure might be bad for a novice with a lower power car that has trouble getting the *** end out, but over all in the long run low polar moment is a good thing for everything. It'll make it more predictable and easier to drive. You just have to set the car up right. if there is less weight in the *** end, that is less weight you have to catch when you throw it sideways.

the mazdatrix super angle kit does essentially the same thing as shimming, but it doesn't work for non-PS. It should be pretty straight forward to do with large washers. make sure you realign your car afterwards...

Yeah im in the non-ps boat. Ehhh.. could be worse, may swap it down the road. Or I'll just get jacked in the turning of the wheel muscles.

Im a fan of Tsuchiya's just get out and drift mentality. I have a diff that locks, my skill level isnt going to benefit from buying a bunch of trick parts. I or we as a drifting fan base must actually go drive to improve. I think once i have a good foundation of ability, any appropriate part will build upon that. Its overcoming the initial wall of... oh god dont hit that curb! Lol

Ahhhhhhhh... man that looks like wayyyyyy too much fun! Rally is my first motorsport love. I really shouldnt of watched those videos lol. You guys are rolling for sure.. that long fast section with the kinks looks amazing.

When is the next one? Id at least like to come out and take pics. Its at summit point?

Nice save! Looks like you lost time but you kept it rubber side down. Doesnt look like a place you wanna be testing countersteeri g skills lol. That final super tight chicane is just mean. I understand its purpose and all.. but it looks all off cambered and way tight. Does the course stay the same or do they mix it up?

The course changes every race + it changes at lunch half way through the day.

We also have 3 fields we rotate between.

I am looking for one second hand, C/L & various forums haven't found me a match yet. Mounting is no problem, I can weld up a mount when I get it. I've also been looking for a replacement rear that has good bearings, disks, and a LSD so I can just swap the whole thing and not have any downtime, but that has been unsuccessful so far as well.

Seats I want (Kirkey Part Numbers):
36500 - 16" hip width (preferred)
36700 - 17" hip width
36900 - 18" hip width
