Finding power for your N/A (With Hydrogen!) -Roen Edit

well, i saw another thread that had this idea and i liked it but everyone seemed to want to dispute weather or not it worked, where it worked, and a bunch of other ****.

KEEP THAT OUT OF THIS THREAD!!!! if you have something that may or may not work, post it up. if you want to dispute anything then make a new thread, but leave it out of here!

and with that said, here is what was posted in the other thread and i will add some of my own. (Disclaimer - all HP gains are estimates and have not been dyno tested by me. If you, personally, have done them AND dyno tested AND have the sheets, please post them up. If you dont fall into all those catagories, please keep your comments to yourself.)

These are the gains I saw on our dyna-pack

1) Clutch fan removal, electric fan install. Hp gain of 8-12 rwhp.

2) (distributer guys only) upgrading to FC coils, and a MSD 6al for leading. 15 rwhp gain

3) Going to full synthetic in transmission, rear end. Havent re-verified gain, but est 2-4rwhp.

4) underdrive pulley kit. 5 rwhp (this was on a pretty small factory set already)

5) Switching to green air filter, with cold air source 4 rwhp gain over the k+N

6) (distributer guys only) Remove one spring off the weights, and cut the slots in trailing vaccum pot larger, to close up the trailing split to 4-5 degrees. 3-4rwhp in the center of powerband, 2-3rwhp gain at peak.
7) Porting your intake manifolds ~ 12 - 17 RWHP gains

8) TB mod ~ 4 - 6 RWHP gains

9) TB boring ~ 12 - 15 RWHP gains

10) cut crush washers off of spark plugs ~ ?2 - 4? RWHP gains

11) Clean your car!!! the lighter the car the faster the car!!

12) use Motorcoat ~ 7 - 10 RWHP gains

i am aware that some of these are not the easiest things to do but they do all work, i am positive about this.

i also saw in the other thread that there was a dispute about weather or not it is worth it to do some of the smaller HP gain mods. Yes, it is worth it. Maybe not by themselves, but together, they do add up. Take them all, no matter how small, and add them up, it does help.

please add to it what you see fit.

These estimates are EXTREMELY optimistic. So with your numbers, you can muster another 38hp out of the stock intake and throttle body? I know it isnt perfect, but it isnt a terrible bottle neck. I understand the concept of removing the crush washers to raise CR, but they are there for a reason. Also, what the hell is Motorcoat?

yes, we all know of these. I am trying to keep it to things not many have heard of.

no. it is stuff that you can buy usually at truck stops, you put it in with your oil every so often and it coats the inside of the motor and makes it run better. This was told to me by one of my good friends that has been around rotaries for a long while and said you will notice a difference. it is safe for the TII as well

the stuff is not cheap though...

all the estimates are from what i have been told from other people, and yes, that is why i put in that disclaimer.

The stock intake was made very well from the factory but through many people tinkering and trying new things there has been ways found to increase HP greatly through the stock intake by modifying it in different ways. the TB boring is a little difficult to get done correctly but it does help a lot! there is definitely a feelable gain there.

the only purpose of the crush washer is to help hold the spark plug down, it is a locking washer. it has been proven to work and it does not hit any internal parts.

now please, add some more stuff guys! lets get some good info for all the N/A guys out there that want some power on the stock port but just cant find it! I know someone has some more good ideas at least!

im really doubtful that an electric fan gains an average of 10hp... however, id imagine that using if us s4 guys use s5 rotors, we should see around a 5~10hp gain, just due to high compression and less rotational mass

You relieve that the difference is .3 right? The hp difference between s4 and s5 is the intake. But I do agree that its a good upgrade anyways. And there is a either a chart or a vid that proves 8whp if i remember correctly with electric fan over stock.

we were just looking at dyno charts and going from 11:1 air fuel to 12:1 was worth 10-15hp across the rpm range. lowest gain was 10hp, and it made 15 more peak.

we did it with an e6x, but you could do it with an safc

that is not entirely true, the difference is that the S5 rotors were made to give the engine higher compression and you would also need to have the motor rebalanced if you did that because the S5 motor has better balancing than the S4 and that is why they can rev higher with a less chance of a catastrophic failure.

also, the reason the e-fan helps gain so much HP is because it cools the motor better. a cooler motor runs better!

I like the discussion guys! and thanks for not haveing the bickering **** that was in that other thread! with some work we might be able to find a way to hit 210 RWHP without opening the motor!

keep it up guys!

Right. The difference in compression is .3, s4's are 9.4:1 and s5's are 9.7:1. But your right about the better balancing and lighter rotational mass, thats why I said its a good idea anyways.

alright were getting there guys! as soon as i get my car back (may be awhile) im gonna get everything possible done to my engine, get it dyno'd, and see if it cant reach at least the 200 mark on stock ports!

keep the ideas coming!

Would 200 hp be possible on S4, with these?

Hate to burst your bubble, but there is no real way to hit 200 whp on stock ports. Most of the top running ITS guys are around 180 and those guys have done their homework. I have a large street port S4 with S5 manifold and all the usual bells and whistles and I would doubt that I make much over 150 whp since I am still using the stock ECU. It is extremely rare for a well built and tuned street port motor to break 200, let alone stock ports.

I vote on getting a light weight flywheel. and perhaps changing the final gear to improve acceleration.

yes, i understand that it is very rare for this to happen, but i am still going to find everything i can and get it as close to 200 as possible! and if the right amount of care is taken im 100% sure it can happen.

good luck on your quest for 200whp on stock ports. As far as some of your opinions and/or comments about power gains and etc on here, I will only say in most areas I politely disagree with you.

A reminder to whomever may be reading this with anticipation of getting all of the gains listed, do more research for yourself and remember to not take any of this as cold hard fact, just opinions unless backed up by undeniable truth (dyno graphs?).

The e-fan mod for example does this.

Good luck anyways

I've never heard of the S5 rotors idea but it seems like it would work. I have heard about using an rx8 E-shaft. I don't know how much hp it may/may not gain. I just saw it was mentioned on here a while ago.

the rx8 eshaft doesn't gain any power. Its cheaper. It might be lighter but the only advantage I have seen is its cheaper. To much crap to make it work for me. The oil seal ring doesn't fit and that rules it out for me, but there are people who have made it work.

It's about 0.5lb lighter and have extra clearances on the ends of the shaft for high rpm use. I use them all the time.

Thanks for the luck as i will need it, but what here is it that you disagree with? I would like to know so i may continue my research. I have just opened my own rotary shop and am working on some R&D and would like all (helpful) criticism and comments. I will be getting my car back today and i have a friend with a dyno, so i will start doing mods and testing them to see which are true and which are internet made.

This is true, not much has been tested on dyno, and still, will not be the same for every car, but i wish to change this fact and get solid evidence of what happens when these mods are done.

as for the RX8 e-shaft, i have heard of this but do not know to much about it. if anyone can find something on this and post it up for reference to all, that would be great! it cant hurt to learn a little more about these wonderful cars.

Thanks all! keep it coming!

Didn't a guy on nopistons tune like 206hp at the wheels out of a stock 6 port with haltech? i remember seeing the dyno sheets.

Thank you. I knew that there was more to it then what I said and I should have stated that.

I have read and done that removing the actuator rod and journal for the sleeves you gain some power as long as you still slope the end of the port like pineapples inserts. I loctite'd my sleeves in with the inserts and noticed a difference from ~4000rpms to 6500rpms. It pulls to 7500 now that I removed my cats. I am very impressed and pleased with the results. The only down side is its a little tougher to get going if I have the a/c on from a stop.
