sub enclosures
Hi guys, on saturday night my car was broken into and about a grand worth of audio equipment and other stuff was jacked. I blame this mostly on my big *** tube enclosure that sat in the back. It was quite visible and would obviously attract thieves. So I am thinking about making a new enclosure, possibly in the storage bins or another concealed place that would be a good place for a sub. I need your input on where would be best and if there is interest I could make some for others as well. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated and I would love to help out with the community by making these. I have access to a FULL woodshop and have a friend that's familiar with fiberglass too.
Thanks,
Aaron

Back when I worked for a car audio shop, I experimented with a few different shapes and sizes of boxes for my two 12's. I tried them facing front, back, up, down, and angled, but the one I found that sounded best was just a rectangular box made out of 3/4" MDF that was .75 cubic ft for each sub with them firing straight up into the hatch glass.

That is a a very good question where to put the subs in my case i am going to put my too 12"s over the 2 wholes or holding compartments however if you were to custome build some boxes at an angle i would need to show you a pic and put some fiber glass in bottom of compartments then you can get some really descent sound also for loudnes port the dang boxes just not the same enclosed.

put ur subs where the spare is, cut that protruding piece where u screw the spare onto. then make a custom box there, put the amp in the passenger storage bin, relocate the battery to the driver side bin.
cut some holes on the bin doors to fit some 6x9's, then ur all set. (my system)

it depends on the subs that you're gonna have......i work at an audio shop and i can tell u that a bandpass box aint worth ****....all it is is something pretty to look at......in our case, a ported box will work wonders because of the small room that we have.....(obviously a sealed enclosure takes up more room aka more noticeable) spec out your sub/s and then build a ported box ...trust me if its made right, youll be happy with the results

thats what i thought, just used more juice. like the carver sunfire sub for example: that thing is only maybe 1 cu. foot and is rated at 2700 watts. It all depends on the sub though.

Hi,
you can use the spare tire place. Some subwoofers work very fine without a fully closed box, just fixed on a board size of your trunk. But TSP must fit this special "spare tire enclosure".
See on my site:

Sorry, it's German, maybe you can have it translate by a web service (e.g. Web-Translator of http://translator.abacho.de/ works fine).
Or you can make a standard vented/ported enclosure in your spare tire place.

What I would do is go back to what was working for you before but do what I did and bolt everything to the floor!..I have several expensive pieces of gear in plain sight and Ive had a few people try and steal my ****....Ive had to replace a few side windows but I still have everything......If someone wants the **** out of my car they better steal the whole damn car!

mine was bolted! they bent the metal bracket holding the sub in half getting it out! although my amp was not bolted to anything. They even still stole my receiver without a freakin faceplate, i still have it.

oohhh.... i like that. that's exactly how I was picturing it in my mind only on an fc. is it just mdf or did you use fiberglass too? How's the sound quality with the subs in that position? would anybody be interested in a setup like this if I decide to make one?

I am in the midst of making fibreglass boxes for the compartments, I have finished the 1st layer which is more like a mold that I am going to sand and add more layers too. Then I am planning to attach 3/4" MDF with the subs (either 2 10's or 4 8's) to the front of the fibreglass. Another option that I thought of when starting the project, is to completely remove the sheet metal that holds the compartments and custom build a box that fits in that space, which would give you much more room for a bigger sub like 2 12"s
I don't expect the sound to be as good from the compartments compaired to a sub facing the hatch, because there will be no reflex from the hatch glass. But it's goona look a hell of a lot cooler and I will have some 'trunk' space!

This is how I did it.... the only problem is that thieves can see the amp but sometimes when I park it I just put something over it not that much of a hassle...

Having the subs right behind the seats looks really good and would give alot more trunk space, but how does it sound. When you have the subs up do u really feel them since your seat is right infront of them or is it not to bad.

Well my subs are 2 10' 400W peak(200 W RMS) Clarion. The amp that is powering them is 200W so each amp receives 100 watts. And let me tell you that having the subs right in back of you... you don't need more than 100 watts! On my HU I set my subs to -1 and it's enough! I can blast them up to +8 and when I do I feel that my car will explode lol But when played at a normal level, it is the sweetest bass you can have since the subs are right in back of you.. and you wondering if your ears hurt after a while.. they don't if you don't go to crazy.. IMO it's the best setup you can have! And yes the 10' fit perfectly

That's a very nice setup! hmmm... maybe something like that would work but probably have to have the amp somewhere else so it is harder to see... is it fiberglass or how did you go about making the setup?

I don't know EXACTLY how the guy did it but he drilled some holes in the storage bin in back of the seats(about 11 inches big or something) and he put some wood in it also so that I wouldn't hear rattling. He didn't put that much because he didn't want to add too much weight but the way he did it it was perfect.. if you want some more info I can always ask him if you want to know how to do it.
