PORTING Discussion
Guys, I'm doing a rebuild and want to port my 13-rew motor. I have never ported before, but I do have Templates for the intake and exhaust. I also have a set of carbide bits and polishing tools. I'm wondering if you guys can give me some pointers, and even pics on starting porting. I know this is something that takes time to learn and I'm eger to learn this art too. Can you guys give make suggestions on how to start and what to look out for when porting. BTW, I'm doing on of ITO's big street ports. I'd like for this Thread to be more Info and ideas ,not arguments, because it can be used for new and upcoming rotor heads when needed. I will post pics each time I do something to help you all see my progress.
Thanks Guys, I know you all will come through.
Keith

BTW, can you say which bit you used when you work on a particular part and so forth.
Thanks again.

Here is a pic of Ito's agressive streetport template against a stock 13B Cosmo RE secondary port.

Here's a pic of the primary port with Ito's template.

If your using Ito's agressive streetport template, just follow the outline exactly!! Dont port too far towards the coolant o-ring grooves or the side seal could become unsupported and catch on the closing edge. Bevel your closing edge and make it smooth so the seals dont have any chance of being damaged.

To bevel the edge I use a very small carbid bit with the dremel tool, then smooth it down with a 240 grit sanding wheel using an air powered die grinder.
The ports dont look very smooth in the pics but they are fairly smooth to touch them. I'd rather leave them a bit rough for air/fuel atomization. Thats kind of a debate to polish them to a mirror finish or leave them a bit rough.
Personally.....its not worth the extra time and energy to polish them smooth.
