My car was supposed to have landed on Sunday in Vancouver (May 20th). Due to the long week-end I thik I am going to have to wait til tomorrow to find out if the car actually did land on this date. Also due to the long week-end, it makes it a short work week at the docs so I might not be able to get my car through customs and have everything finalized til early next week. But I'm really hoping that I can fly down on Friday and pick up the car.

I have just found out this morning that my car landed on the week-end, it just passed the CFIA soil inspection and is now ready for my customs guy to clear it through customs. He is going there this morning to do all of the paper work and the car should be ready for me to pick it up by tomorrow early afternoon. I'm getting REALLY excited. I will know by around 3 or so Calgary time if I should book my flight and fly down to get my car tomorrow.

It left Japan on the 2nd. The car wasn't legal to arrive in Canada until May so that was the earliest ro/ro ship that my car could get on. It took the car 18 days to get here on a boat. 2 days to get the soil inspection done and now 2 days to clear customs.

Yeah forsure man. Let me know when you get your gets to Calgary.

I will be taking a tonne of pics to show everyone exactly what kind of shape the car is in. I hope it's in great shape but I have my doubts some times.

Also I recieved my reciept from my customs broker and to have him bring my customs through + all of my costs at customs it was just over $1100. So my total is right around $8200 as I expected it would be.

Well I am home now and unfortunatly my car didn't make it back with me. I picked it up from the dock and once I got a boost the car started up righta way and ran great. I drove it to STaffs Auto in Vancouver to get an inspection done on it and my fluids changed. After my a couple of hours they called me back and said that the car was good to go and that I had bought a solid car. The car ran great, the stearing and suspension was nice and tight and everything seemed good. I got the car back from the shop and started driving it home through crappy rush hour in vancouver. I got about a hour outside of Van and the highway started to open up a bit. I pulled over to pass someone and as I stepped on the gas I blew a seal. I then had to limp the car back to North van to a motel where I stayed the night. This morning I went back to Staffs auto and looked at the car with them and confirmed that I had blown a seal in the car. So thats where my car is right now. I should have the car back in a couple of weeks with a fresh rebuild in it. I can't say anything bad about the importing experience since the car was in good shape when I got it, it ran good when I got it, its just that the engine was really fragile and I made one wrong decision and it cost me. I was planning on having to get a rebuild next year so this wasn't a huge shock to me, I just wish I didn't have to fork out the extra money right away.

Staffs Auto in Vancouver is a great shop to deal with. They are very friendly and professional there and they definatly know their rx-7's. They have plenty of experience with the engines and I would recomend them to anyone. Hopefully I will have my car back and running soon and then I can take some better pics of the car. I took one pic of it but I think I left my camera in the car. lol. The only flaws with the car is that on the driver side door the plastic lid cover for the compartment is missing. Also it looks like the car was sitting in a paintshop somewhere and had overspray land on it. The paint is really rough on the top of the car but smooth on the sides. So once I get the car I will give ita really good buff job and see how she turns out.

Sorry to hear about this. At least you will have a fresh rebuild to enjoy for the summer.

Look forward to seeing her once she's made it to Alberta!!

Are you planning to fly out there and drive it back or ship it?

Oh look at that an imported FD that needs a rebuild.... Never seen that before.

Who is building the engine for you? Should learn to do it yourself, can save alot of money... How much are you expecting the rebuild to cost? Just remember that when seals go they can take out housings, turbo's and other $$$ parts.

Oh and sorry if my post came across as being harsh. It just seems like alot of people buying these JDM cars don't know what they are actually getting themselves into.

Yeah I think that once I am done everything I am going to be somewhat happy that I rebuilt the engine right away. Staffs auto seems to be a great shop so I have complete faith in them doing the rebuild. The rebuild with new housings and everything is going to cost around 6500 or so. This includes tear out and install. I am going to talk to Greg whos doing the rebuild and see what he thinks about me driving the car back to Calgary. If there is no issues with that I mineswell fly down there and finish the road trip that I already started.

I know that there is going to be TONNES of people coming and saying that they told me so. And I am expecting that. But the thing is that when I recieved the car it ran great, the exterior condition of the car is pretty good and same with the interior of the car. The only problem with it is that the one turbo is leaking some oil but that seems to be a rather common problem with most cars. So in terms of me buying a crappy car I can't say that I did. I should have driven it a bit nicer right away concidering that these engines are really fragile and the engine has been sitting for who knows how long. As anyone knows, blowing a apex seal can happen to anyone at anytime. Thats life. This may or may not have been a coincidence. We will see. Everything else on the car seems to be very solid. Even the mechanics at Staffs auto were all pleased with the overall shape of the car.

I'm used to your posts in other forums. Also I knew exactly what I was getting myself into. If you read any of my posts and talk to anyone that I have personally talked to about my car I was expecting to find more issues wrong with the car than I actually found. I was also planning on having to do a rebuild in the next year or so. Just not in the next day or so. But oh well, once that is done I will have a solid car to drive that hopefully won't give me too many problems.

Oh and Rx72Heaven. The car looks good. My car has those tacky floor mats in it aswell. They actually aren't so bad close up and in person. They have a fancy metal RX-7 tag on them. haha.

After the rebuild and other parts that went with it you will realize that you will have spent the same if not more money on your jdm car than a local car. If you bought a local car you would of been sitting on the proper side of the car. Good luck and let us know your final money tally once the car is done.

Yeah I have been thinking about that a little bit lately. The nice thing though is that once everything is said and done with the car I will probubly have a car that will last longer than your average LHD car that I could buy locally for the same price.

Rx72Heaven when you get your car, just be very gental with it for the first while. You are going to want to give it some time to clear up all of the carbon and all of the fun stuff. I am putting a decent amount of blame on myself for the engine blowing. I was soo pumped to finally get the car and drive it that my sencibleness kind of went out the window. Driving the car was an amazing experience and I just couldn't hold myself back from feeling the power every now and then. And I shouldn't have done that so soon. But oh well you live and you learn.

It's impossible to say when an engine will go. Far too many factors to even begin to give an estimate, especially with a turbocharged car. Expect a rebuild though, it's a 15+ year old turbo car it's going to need to be done.

Also 6500 for a rebuild, well it depends on what all is getting done. Think of it this way, if you need: new rotors, new housings, irons lapped (or replaced), rebuild kit, possibaly turbo(s), oil pump, and then labour you are looking at alot of money...

I will know by tomorrow exactly what I need. I am going to be getting my parts list tomorrow from the shop so that I can do some shopping around to see what all I need. They are charging me $2200 for labour after GST and PST. So thats not too bad concidering that covers their labour to take out the engine, inspect everything, rebuild the engine, and re-install the engine. I know that I might pay a bit more at this shop compared to a place like RX7specialties but I know that this guy will be very thorough on what gets done and that the engine will be rebuilt properly. I personally don't have any experience with RX7specialties so I'm not trying to bash them as a shop, just with the mixed reviews going around about them I would rather just leave it in Van and let them deal with it.

Dont forget the cost of parts. FD parts, being more expensive in some cases.

Just hope the seal didnt damage anything else.

Yeah I'm really hoping that they didn't. But you never know. My one rotar still had full compression but the other had nothing. So at least I know one side is still in good shape. lol.
