Calgary area RX7 meet/BBQ Sunday, July 29th, 2007
The Calgary summer meet/ BBQ in Black Diamond (45 mins southwest of Calgary) will be held on Sunday, July 29th. Should the weather crap out we'll have the meet the following Sunday, August 5th.This should give everyone lots of time to plan their time schedules and/or get their 7s in top form. Besides, while the weather is never certain, it does tend to be stable and favourable from the latter part of July through the end of September.
As before, there will be an initial meet/greet at 11am in the Deerfoot Mall parking lot. This is located on 64th ave NE, on the east side of deerfoot. The BBQ itself is in Black Diamond at 2pm. This means that if we wrap up the meet at the mall around 1pm there will be plenty of cruise time to get to the BBQ.
The address is 208 3rd street NW, Black Diamond.
To get here, head south on Deerfoot, following that route out of Calgary to the south. Once you reach the point where Deerfoot (hwy 2) links up with McLeod Trail southbound, get into the right-hand lane and take the hwy 2A exit south/ west-bound into Okotoks. The distance from this junction to Okotoks is about 8 kms.
Stay on the main route through Okotoks until you reach hwy 7, an east-west route. As you approach this intersection you'll see a Canadian Tire, Sobeys, Scotiabank and Walmart on your left. There will be a sign on your right indicating Black Diamond traffic turn right, so you'll need to be in the right-hand lane.
Turn right onto hwy 7 westbound and follow your nose for 18 kms. This puts you in Black Diamond. Watch your speed entering town, particularly where the speed limit drops from 100 to 70, then from 70 to 50. The cops love to dine on unsuspecting out-of-towners' wallets, especially if said tourists are driving Japanese-built sports cars.
This town is small. You'll reach the downtown "core" (a 4-way stop sign) within 30 seconds of entering the town limit. Why they bothered to divide the town into NE, SE, SW and NW sectors is beyond me, but the 4-way stop is where all sectors meet.
Drive straight through the 4-way and continue for three blocks to 3rd street, which is just before a strip mall on your right. Turn right onto 3rd street. Our house is one-and-a-half blocks down on your right-hand side. Our back yard is large enough (ie: huge) to accomodate parking for 10 cars, with more parking available in the front driveway and on the street.
If you take the more scenic route to get here (ie: west out of Calgary via hwy 8, then south through Bragg Creek, hwy 762, Millarville and Turner Valley) watch your speed as you leave Turner Valley eastbound. There is a mild downgrade here, on the other side of which is often a speed trap. The speed limit of 50kms/hr here is about 20 kms an hour lower than it has any right to be, but the cops and the town are addicted to the succulent taste and smell of other people's money. The odds of there being a speed trap set up here is directly proportional to the niceness of the weather on any given day.
Driving through Turner Valley means you'll be entering Black Diamond from the west on hwy 22. As soon as you cross the bridge coming into town you'll see a service station on your left and beyond that (also on the left) a strip mall. Turn left onto 3rd street just beyond the strip mall. Our house is one-and-one-half blocks down on your right.

Glad you asked.
As was the case last year, we intend to supply the venue (our house), some of the (non-alc) bevs, some of the burgers and weiners, and the condiments, salad dressing, etc. But this year we also supply the BBQ and propane--- we now have one, so nobody else has to go out of their way for that.
As for everything else we need volunteers, and we'll need to know who wants to bring what in order to coordinate things.
If anything, last years' meet left us with lots of left-over soft drinks, tossed salad, chips and beer. (We managed to give away some of this to the last bunch of people to leave, but even then there was still way more than we needed. About the only thing we ran out of was burger paddies, but Tiana quickly ran to the corner store and bought another jumbo box mid-meet, so everybody still got their carnivorous cravings taken care of.
This means that for the most part, volunteers shouldn't need to bring much. Here's a list of the remaining items for volunteers to, uh... volunteer:
1. More burgers. The economy sized boxes of frozen paddies available at Safeway, Superstore, Walmart, etc. work very well. They're cheap, and they don't fall apart on the grill while cooking.
2. Weiners, smokies, etc. We only anticipate 20 or 30 people max, and most would likely only have one or two of these at most, considering how much more other edibles will be there. Two dozen would probably suffice, 3 dozen at most.
3. Buns. For both burgers and weiners.
4. Process cheese slices.
5. Potato salad.
6. Tossed salad.
7. Potato chips, pretzels, etc.
8. Beverages. Pop, juice, etc. Beer is always welcome for those who need the buzz, but we're a little nervous about the possibility of someone getting blitzed at our residence and then slamming their 7 into a minivan full of girl scouts. Please have a designated driver or stay somewhat sober.
9. Ice. A couple of coolers' worth.
10. Fresh fruit--- watermelon, grapes, cherries, etc. Whatever you prefer.
11. A video camera. What would really be a hit would be clips of cars with short interviews with their owners.

I should be able to make it. Thats one week-end that I don't have anything planned for this summer. I have no problems bringing something to your house for the BBQ but I don't want to commit to brining anything just yet as I am not a forsure to show up. But as soon as I can commit to going, I will let you know and then just let me know what is left for people to bring.
Holy...that will be a busy weekend for me... go to Calgary for the Nickelback concert, then have a party for my birthday(its on the 8th but there is a bunch of us celebrating birthdays) then go to Black Diamond for the meet! Hope I'm up to it! I will do my best to make it there...

Yeah yeah, rub it in...
Actually I'd heard of it, but it's more a case of "happily married to Korean hottie = not interested in sites geared toward singles," Or so I thought, so never bothered to investigate.
But since someone has mentioned it in the same sentence as RX7s...
