Stubborn build.

Warning I'm alittle adhd so this whole process will be all over the place. Mostly doing this so I can pick some knowlage on this journey of a build that started 2 years back. The car started out as a 82 gs rolling chassis. Interior was trashed and was in a decent fender bender on the driver's side. Crunched a door and fender. I'll find them to post.

Not a huge fan of the side mouldings, so there gone. Then the lens looked out of place sticking way out all by its self so did some metal work and is now flush mount.

far from perfect and not "done" yet.

I'll get to the atrocity of a fender flare. I'm not a body man by any means but I am to stubborn to pay someone to do the work for me. So I'll take the learning experience and dive straight in it.

So spot welded it on, taking care to not put to much heat in the panel. I've been watching so videos on body work specifically this guy Fitzee's Fabrication on you tube.

from tack to where I'm stuck on if this finish is good enough for actual paint prep? If anyone could spill some knowledge on body work I'd sure appreciate it.

I used Evercoat Rage Gold to feather in some of the imperfections on the sheet metal. I believe as long as the metal is sealed on the back side so moisture does not get to the filler it should be good

This is my understanding too, I’m going through the same learning process right now and the body guys I talk to just want no holes that go through, body filler works well and is strong if the surface being filled is clean and has no debris....

P.S. I like your flush marker lights so much I’m considering doing it myself! I was going to shave them completely...

Thanks Richard, I'm just overly picky on getting the best end product. And taking it in steps to get there it's been a long process this far but I have time. I wanted to go the route without using filler at all on the car. But I dont believe my skill is there just yet.

Ahha thanks I just hate the trim on these cars, and it dosent help it's about 4 cars into one so I'm missing more than half of them. Flush mount just seemed the way to go. For what my end vision for the car is.

Had some free time today and didint really like how the flares just "floated" on the fenders. So I made a filler peice to blend it all in.

little cardboard filler peice

and made sure to leave extra all around for final fitment.

and some die grinder practice is always good. And hopefully I dont destroy my plates when I port my engine.

and then the the actual welding. Need to work on my skills put getting it done nonetheless.

it's far form done and where I want to leave it for paint but its progress. Gotta finish the spot welds and grinding then cut out the fender.

This is interesting.

You should save all of the rubber trim pieces...someone will want them and they are hard to fid these days.

Good week for progress I'd say. Finished up the rh fender and have it sat back on the car. Happy with how it turned out, but I still might change it up.

I do still half to straighten up the rear where the door pinched it but my body tools are in my shop.

I've half decided to make some skirts and rear spoiler for the car out of sheet steel. And blending it into the front flares.

But as for the lh fender shaved the light the same as the other.

this one sits alot better I think and is centered perfect! Learned from my mistakes the first time well besides this accident.

kinda tacked my pliers to my peice. just a tad bit tho, popped them right off.

Also cut this flare off and welded back on to match the other side. It was way off! Should have took a pic but forgot to.

To the eye it looked right but yeah.... it wasn't. Now its grinding down the welds and then remove the paint.

On the car shots, fits over the tire perfect I think.

Looks good man, but I got a question about making or flaring fenders.(like you did here) Now that you made a new fender essentially, do you have to make an inner fender? Or do you leave it empty underneath and leave the thin edge it creates? Technically two questions lol oops

Thanks there is quite a few hours in it and I'm happy with the outcome of them.
This car never had the inner plastic fender liners. If that's what you referring to. But its all open, at full lock you can look in and see the frame. As for making one I'm not to worried about it. It will just be the outer edge of the flare. Kinda sharp I know but its for "club" racing so id hope everyone knows to avoid it.

Its been a while, but way more work has been put in and drove the car all summer long. And lots of wrenching in-between. Now that winter has started its back in the shop with a whole new to-do list.

Found out alot about the car over the summer and we went thru alot of ups and downs. I was kinda rushed to get it out at the beginning of the year do to my subaru loosing the bottom end (who woulda guessed) so fork out and build a new ej or actually get the 7 out. So the 7 it was, did a rats nest delete right off the bat. Mostly because none of the wiring was plugged in anyway. The shell is a 82 that i converted over to 85 interior, wiring, ect from a parts car. While the 12a is from my last 84 i sold to a buddy who is doing a t2 swap in and made a deal to get the keg back when he started. So with that there isint a hole in the passenger side firewall for the wiring harness to go thru and operate the rats nest. And yes it ran terrible with nothing plugged in but on the car dosen't help there where some vac leaks. Got it all sorted out and i was in business.
first on the list was tires went with toyo r888 finding a 13" tire is ridicules and i was working at a dealership so got a killer discount on them.

got a new set of basset 13x7 with 3.5" backspace for them to sit on aswell. And this is the rear fender and yeah its horribly tacked on but still holding to the day. There on the list to get finished properly.

drove for a month with just the rats delete and on some sticky tires and wow when you get some temp you can really push into a corner and the car just does it. Untell your ball joints fail..... nothing crazy just sketchy. Had a new set on the shelf along with all new bushings for up front installed before i did anything dumb.

had this header on the shelf and no better time to install had access to a lift thanks to ford

also had a 3" exhaust from a wrx laying around in the shop. Some creative thinking and patch work later had a new exhaust on the car and wow was it loud... i mean im young ish but not as young as i used to be. But ill say at 7k she would sing, kill any hearing you had but sing.

I did end up rebuilding the system with a muffler and 2.5" tube way more proper just no pics.

And then the idea was born... turbo charged 12a.
Came straight hear (learned how to really use the search function ) and read anything related to 12a + tubo .then the possibilities come fi, blow thru, 12at stock injection, 13bt stock s4 or s5 fi (im a bit of a hoarder) and have plates housings ect on shelves for just about any configuration i might want to build. And then more research hours and hours days and weeks and ive decided on blow thru as a soild start into this. So there will be another setup roaming the streets keeping it old school. More updates to follow as where still in the past to where i am now in the build and the parts ordered.

Going to be starting on the fuel system first. 3/8 feed and 1/2 return or -6 and -8 an. Fuel pump is a walbro 255, Aeromotive fpr. 100 micron pre filter and a 10 micron right before the fpr. My whole system will be built around an fittings, its kinda a pain with the cost of fittings but i have a collection from over the years so hopefully this keeps the cost down a touch.

Starting at the tank, it seams most drill holes and install bulk heads to adapt to larger lines. I made up a new pick up assembly and brazed on my fittings to the ends.

starting with the plate rough cut out and marked.

Feed is 3/8 and return 1/2 it was kinda a guess with the bends because the old one was butchered and rubber hose used but i got it almost perfect right off the get go.

First attempt and brazing not the best for looks but after twisting and trying to brake the joints i couldn't get them to break free. So we will see how well i really did after some use.

Then back in the tank. Need to order a new gasket so i can call it finished but im happy with the result. And learned a new skill out of it so win win right.

Next i pulled out my old hard lines from under the car and just copied them with the larger lines. Nothing to crazy there although the hold down clamps proved to be a difficult task to remove. Gotta love rusty northern cars. but the lines are back under the car. Going to make some new clamps to hold them up without crushing them.

The plan was to use hard line to an adapters but after my success with brazing im going to be adding ends directly to the hard lines. One less spot for a leak.

So working forwards i need to mount the pre filter and pump. I would like to build a plate to mount them to kinda like the oem setup and location. But after moving stuff around setting the pump in there is no way my pump will fit on the oem plate and in the stock location. But started to get way to cold to be out and under a car.
