After market replacement for distributor/igniters?

Yeah, I know, probably a question of ignorance but I thought I'd try. Did/does anyone make a replacement for the 84 SE distributor that would negate the need/use of igniters? I have looked at the price of distributors and then each igniter and that is super expensive. I was hoping maybe someone came up with a better/cheaper substitute.

Please see my pm response to your note Larry for more details, but the quick answer is yes, according to Tim (who will chime in shortly, I'm sure) you can use GM igniters with the original dizzy just as well as the original stock units. You also may want to post this to the technical section since folks who know about this stuff may not read the build threads.

Should be a cheap and easy fix, good luck!

Theres no aftermarket dizzies for rotaryies by the likes of pertronics etc. If you get a good FB dizzy
and a couple of affordable GM/Ford parts, some relays and wire you can build a significantly better
ignition system than the stock. The upside is its easy and cheap to fix down the road.

See my TFIDFIS link in my sig for the details. Some folks have followed it and are very happy with the
results.

Thanks

I don't even know what a dizzy is. Someone else posted about a 13B REW and, I know what a 13B is but not an REW. Like I said, I have accomplished a significant degree of ignorance since my last Rx7 (an 86). A friend said GM never made/used igniters so I am really confused, but, but, I really appreciate the help. I might get this figured out some day.

You have to use the right vocabulary around them GM folks. They would refer to them
as ignition modules and they would know about them as sitting inside or on top of the
dizzy. GM vehicles have been using these since the 80s.

13B, Renisis, and REW they all confuse me as well. I'll just stick my simple carbed 12A.

Since you're currently in learning mode, and interested in ignition, you should search for the term "DLIDFIS" without quotes. See how to set it up and what others think about it.

Thanks all

The forum member from whom I purchased the car, a really great guy, drove a long way to fix it. Turns out it was the igniter and he gave me a spare one. Now it runs great...except the fan turns slow and the fan clutch does not work. That is my problem. Yes, I have found them and they are not cheap. But it might be registered and on the road soon. Thanks for all the help. GM stuff on a Mazda? I guess whatever works.

everyone likes to have different names for stuff...

dizzy = is an English english slang term for distributor.

Mazda, and a lot of the rest of the world use an ignitor, GM says ignition module, they are basically all a transistor that took the place of ignition points.

the 13B-REW, is Mazda's designation for the 13B Rotary Engine with tWin turbos. its a bit of a translation thing, but think of the W as a double U. on teh internets, REW means the FD engine, and RE is the cosmo engine, but Mazda lists both as REW, as they both have double turbos.

the GSL-SE has a 13B-EGI engine, Electronic Gasoline Injection.

the fan clutch should basically freewheel until the engine hits about 91c, which is just over half way on the gauge.
