three reasons:

(1) the 17s don't let me use pimpin' tires like the Yoko AD08

(2a) for track use I'd rather have the brake dust eat up the $300/per RPF1s

(2b) for winter use I'd rather have the road salt eat up the $300/per RPF1s

Not often in the winter, but sometimes yup. They don't call winter 'turbo weather' for nuthin

Yoko AD08s are about as sticky as you can get for a street tire and are well suited for road race duty. I have no need for slicks yet.

Harsher brake compounds and in particular road salt are murder on the Technipolish finish that the new Fikses come with. Once it's damaged they won't refinish it so you're stuck. IIRC yours have been refurbished and have a bare polished aluminum so you shouldn't have as much to worry about.

Why would I want to permanently alter brand new wheels ?

I think it's silly (and boring) to have multiple sets of the exact same wheels, but I don't go telling you what to do...... feel free to start an 'Amp's Unsolicited Advice' thread if you'd like

I'm curious, Rich. Did you relocate your coils or are they still in the stock location?

Still in stock location believe it or not. Almost new coil pack purchased off someone who paid a lot for them from Mazda.

All of my free time has been spent at the shop lately, but I spent a little time on the car this past weekend.

---installed new Optima red top battery, my old one was on it's last legs and finally died. It was pretty old, so no complaints.

---installed a nice custom made rear hatch carpet, black with red serged border.

---'installed' (um, gently laid in place) a new oem rear hatch cover (non-bose). Now I just need the small ***** the strings attach to in the rear hatch, and have to figure out a way to mount some hooks for it to grab onto on my Axoim rear harness bar.

Carlisi always told me I was crazy for not installing one, benefits being cabin noise from the fuel pump and exhaust greatly reduced. I always ignored him, I'm sure he was somewhere grinning as I set the damn thing in my trunk

---swapped over the mounting brackets for my new 99 bumper, along with a newly polished and clearcoated main bracket (the long one that bolts to the front frame).

---started to fab the mounts for the black anodized aluminum mesh grill I picked up for the three openings in the bumper.

To Do List before DGRRX:

(1) Finish with bumper and mount it up
(2) Install new Maval manual steering rack
(3) Slam on Tanabe sway bars front/rear along with four new oem end links
(4) Stick in Series 8 JDM transmission

and most importantly:

(5) Super Scrubby Sakebomb Projector Headlight luvvin' asaply

I got just one more question:

why is it that several of the single turbo people seem to run their coolant hose (the one that goes into the heater core area) higher than the stock location? I've seen it on a couple of other cars besides Rich's.

The turbo would cook that coolant line if it was in stock position, especially on older style single turbo manifolds.

^^yup. also with the A-Spec long runner manifold there is no room to route it any other way.

I recently found a nice brass 90 degree 5/8th male-to-male barbed fitting for that bend so next time I change the coolant I'm tossing the current plastic one.

A quick shot that shows the car as it sits. Recently bolted on the R-Magic oil cooler ducts, if you're using a usdm rebar you'll have to modify it even more to work with the ducts.

Scrubby took charge of the install of the Sakebomb Projector HID kit (which absolutely rocks btw). I still need to secure the teeny tiny Greddy ballasts in place as well as some of the wiring.

The new front bumper has all brackets mounted and is about to go on, just need to finish mounting the mesh grille for the center opening.

After I get the car running I'm going to get it to our HEATED shop, to install the Maval steering rack, Tanabe F/R sway bars, and 2002 JDM trans

Oh, I also just ordered **another** steering wheel, some of my buds think I'm a tad nuts because right now I have sitting around:

1. 350mm Nardi Deep Corn Punched Leather w/red stitching
2. 330mm Nardi Deep Corn Suede w/red stitching
3. 360mm Mazdaspeed Black Leather
4. 350mm HKB Aluminum and Black Leather (just sold this sucker)
5. 380mm Nardi JDM (w/Airbag) 99-spec
6. New addition inbound

I also just had my hot little hands on Supernaut's brand spankin' new Spirit R steering wheel, which is just a beautiful piece. Basically I've become a steering wheel *****.

Btw, rash_rvg, you can see the Aquamist pump mounting location on the front tow hook (between the driver's side horn and oil cooler duct).

Looking at the pic I need to tweak the [freshly powder coated] driver's side horn bracket a bit to get the horns lined up properly.... you can also spy my monster DD XX-Large iced coffee, the people making it always thing I'm nuts for ordering iced coffee when it's 35 degrees out

If you feel the need to dump the 350mm Deep Corn w/ punched leather and red stitching, shoot me a PM. I'll take it off your hands.
