The best place to start this thread would be at the beginning. Roughly five years ago i was working a service call in a complex my company maintains. Happen to stumbled across a 93 vr that was parked outside a tenets office covered with a blue tarp. I asked the tenet about the car his reply was that it was his sons car. After many years of asking (and the car sitting unmoved) his son finally decided to let the car go.
The car was overheated some years back and the motor was pulled for a rebuild. P.O. never got around to doing anything with. From there the car sat approximately ten years in this back complex where it was vandalized and left in a total state of distress. Most people would of taken a vehicle in this condition straight to the junk yard or parted it out. Fortunately for this old girl i'm a hard headed person.

The day i brought her home.

 

I started out with just trying to assess the damage and where to start first. I begun with the just a general cleaning. 10 years of weather took its tole on her.

The engine bay as it started,

 

I figured the best place to start would be on the undercarriage so i pulled everything out from underneath, and by everything i do mean everything.










Started tagging everything and boxing up parts so nothing would get lost when i needed it later in the build. I cleaned the fuel tank out. You would not believe the trash that came out of it. Polished the 20 year old paint just for the hell of it. Kinda got tired of looking at all the oxidation from years of weather.





Few interior shots after i cleaned it up a bit. The interior is surprisingly clean and intact for all the years it sat with a broken drivers side window.

After many, many night of scrubbing off all the grime and dirt i started to paint the undercarriage



Blasted, braced, repainted, and rebuilt the complete IRS with powerflex bushing, new oem helm joints. I also went with Rotary Extreme trailing arms and toe links. On a side note dealing with rotary extreme was awesome along with the quality of the components are top notch.

 

I started to reassemble the undercarriage, Rebuild the entire braking system, new bearing and hubs front and rear, rebuild the axles with new boots ect, replaced every fuel line and brake line. Went with the areomotive 340 stealth pump.

Basically i replaced, repaired, and repainted everything underneath the car.....

 

Paint day...

 

I picked up a set of used dual oil coolers from a r1 model along with a koyo radiator




I have also decided to go with a full wire tuck as time permits. Finished putting my engine back together last week. When photo bucket stops acting up i will upload some pictures of that progress as well.

The P.O. pulled the engine due to overheating it and believe me when i tell you he wasn't a mechanic of any sort. In my spare time i got the pieces i needed for the rebuild.. i went with the oem seal kit, new rotor housings, all new bearing, als apex seals, the whole deal. I even ported my irons and housings while i was in there. Here is a few pictures of my parts gathering and assembly.

Machined my rotor housings to accept alternate spark plugs.

Completly polished my Uim, throttle body (which i completely disassembled) , and ported both uim and lim.. NEVER again will i do this... for those of you that have you know exactly what i'm talking about.

After i got everything up to spec i spent a weekend on and off assembling the short block















That's about it to date, after i decide on a turbo setup and finalize a few other thing on the direction of the build i'll up date the thread.

A random side note... my car must of been one of the first touring models in the states according to the born on date of 01/92. Kinda neat and I am very glad i was able to get to her before it was to late.....

Nice what did you paint underneath the car with? Did you do anything to the rack and pinion?

 

I used por 15. It's pricy but I've had great results with it. All I did with the rack was replace the inner and outer tie rod ends, new boots and powerflex bushings.

 

POR 15 is the way to go, excellent work so far, you definitely saved that car.

It was just dumb luck that I came across.

I agree, it was a lil tricky to spray at first because its so thick but I used a 2.5 tip and it worked like a charm.
