I'm sure this is common knowledge to most people, or at least a lot of people, but while I knew there were some differences, I didn't know they operated so differently.

My main concern is how the pumps operate, or if they all operate the same way and it's just the system that decides how the pump operates. I would imagine it's the latter since pumps don't have an operating system.

I used to have a FJO kit and the controller failed. I started to install a Snow Performance kit and I got as far as swapping the pump, but then was told that my Syvecs could run water injection. So I ended the swap but left the pump, and I can't keep water injection working more than about an hour, and that's after swapping outputs on the ECU and changing a few other things I don't understand since I'm not good with tuning. I'm just trying to make sure I don't need to swap back to my old pump and it's just settings in the ECU possibly. Plus I thought the link might be valuable to anyone who doesn't know much about AI.

I wonder if your Holley/FJO unit is meant for a specific controller/solenoid driver due to the operating hertz values. Just spit-balling here, but perhaps the Syvecs & the pump/pulse solenoid don't play nice together electronically as-is.

I have the pulse solenoid from ProMeth, and noticed the following description in their notes:

"Can be used with progressive controller and safely ran at 20-25 hertz @ 200 PSI. You may increase the hertz to 30 with lower pump pressure of 160 psi."

Anyway, I have a solenoid available should you want to attempt a simple swap to see if it solves your operating issues.

That could be, I hadn't thought of that. Maybe I'll reach out to ProMeth and see if I can get more information. We've had the system working at some point in the past, but then it stopped working again, I'm not even sure my pump is pushing anything.

I might take you up on that, but I'm not even close to testing it right now. Thanks!

Just a couple of thoughts on that Auquamist article…

Hard to argue that their pulsing pump would not produce quicker and more precise and consistent results. BUT, I think how important that is largely depends on what your AI goals are. If you’re tuning with AI it would definitely be the one to go with. But if you’re just using some water for additional engine cooling (i.e. NOT just for lower IAT’s) and carbon control and not tuning with it…
I also think that depending on the nozzle placement, atomization isn’t as critical on the rotary as they might have you believe. That’s not to say if it comes out like spit it’s OK. But seems like pressurized airflow will tend to disperse it evenly as it passes through the intake tract, even if it’s not as finely done as it would be on a pulsed pump system.

In my case (not tuning with it) I looked at cost and complexity. The latter tends to be inversely related to reliability.

Not a whole lot. In addition to having issues with water injection, my boost control wasn't working properly and I had issues with the AC compressor clutch engaging immediately when I started the car, but only if the system wasn't charged. WEIRD. And it had started doing that a couple years ago out of the blue. If the system was charged, it worked properly still.

Anyway, I sent the ECU back to Chris Ludwig and he opened it and discovered something had exploded. He ran some tests and found some issues but to my untrained mind it didn't sound like those issues were related to my problems. He sent the ECU back to England to get repaired but there are no updates since then. Chris had said he had something to discuss with me about the water injection issue, but we haven't yet.

Yeah I never really planned on tuning with AI, mainly because I don't want reliability to be dependent on the system not failing. I still want to optimize it, but it's not the end of the world if it's not set up perfectly. One thing I noticed from when I had functioning AI is that when I disassembled that engine the spark plug holes didn't have any cracks next to them. I did still see a bit of carbon buildup but I wasn't sure how much cleaner it was compared to not using AI.

Regarding nozzle placement, I put mine right after the IC so that it would have more time to atomize and cool the air charge, and I figured it might get caught up in the IC if I ran it before (not sure how true that would be lol). Initially I used just distilled water but I forgot to swap it out before winter and it froze the pressure sensor, so I started using -20F washer fluid and I eventually had issues with deposits in the throttle body and it seized the air bleed screw. I tried to dislodge the screw and it broke the throttle body. I talked to Dale about this and he said he never had any issues with the 0F washer fluid he used, so I'm guessing it's just due to the increased methanol content in the -20F.

Side note: Weren't you planning on coming to visit CO at some point?

Still hope to come out Eric. I’ll probably be a bit far north of you in the Ft Collins/Greeley area where family are at, but still have your number and a day-trip south might be fun.

Ok cool! Let me know if and when you make it. There are some owners up there too, so if it's over a weekend especially we might be able to make something happen. If it's a weeknight, we'll see what we can do haha. Although we can definitely make it happen on a weeknight if you come down here.
