Personally I use 5w-40 rotella synthetic. It is a diesel engine oil and has high levels of zddp compared to gasoline oils.fpr the exact reason you mention, cold pumpability. 80% of engine wear comes from startup when you need the oil to be easily pumped.

I agree. I know that oils will always be a very debated topic, but my thought is that rotaries always have fuel dillution kill oil faster than any gas engine, so shorter change intervals are required to make sure things stay in spec. The only reason I could think to running a heavier weight oil would be that you want to go to a longer interval and fight that dillution.

Like you, I've become a big advocate of the Shell Rotella T6 5w-40 diesel oil. Synthetic with high levels of zinc for protection and it's $21 for a gallon at WallyWorld so I'm not upset at my shorter change intervals and feel like I'm flushing money down the drain. I ran the M1 5w-40 turbo diesel truck for a while, but the Rotella is cheaper and I feel it's held up to the fuel dillution better than the M1.

For reference my car has dual aftermarket oil coolers so I'm not overly concerned with heating up the oil. I do still track the car with the stock twins.
