MN Won't crank

New FD owner looking for some help. Tried searching but didn't find anything so please point me in the right direction as I would assume this is not a new occurrence.

Just purchased this car with the click, click, start issue. Yesterday I tried the security relay bypass listed here: https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generati...-relay-872841/.

Once I inserted the jumper wire, the car would not even crank. I removed the jumper and reconnected the security relay with the same results. All electrical systems start up and I can hear the fuel pump start as well. When turned to start, nothing happens. I thought I may have blown a fuse, but checked all that I could find and all looked well.

Can anyone help or point me in the right direction? Please bear with me as I am new to ownership and the forum.

Thanks for your help!

Had a similar issue, mine was fixed by making sure the power cable had a good contact at the fuse box and was clean. Also make sure your grounds are good.

Check for voltage at starter B+ post that is supposed to always get power and then check for voltage at the solenoid post while cranking. That'll determine if power is making it to the starter, and if it's enough.

Thanks for the help. Had to wait for the wife to get home to turn the key.

Voltage at starter B+ post is 12.54V, same as right at the battery.

Voltage at the solenoid post while cranking is roughly 6V.

Assuming this is not enough, any additional ideas what it could be? I already bypassed the clutch switch and starter interlock, so don't think those are the issues. It's possible I may have knocked something loose while trying to do the initial bypass and then check the fuses, but do not see anything that looks loose.

So had a bright idea to try jump starting with another car and it fired right up. After running for 10-15 minutes, I moved it and turned it off. 5 minutes later I figured I would try again and see if it would turn over and it fired right up.

Any idea what could have happened? Battery voltage was reading over 12V every time I checked it.

Just looking to do what I can to avoid this issue. Being stranded in my garage is one thing, elsewhere wouldn't be much fun...

Getting 12V checking the battery terminals with a meter doesn't prove the total condition of the battery. It sounds like it just didn't have enough charge available to turn the starter. The starter draws far more amperage (current) than anything else in the car. There was enough current in the battery to run other things but not the starter.

Sounds like the battery needs a charge. Sometimes when they're new they can run down sitting in the parts store before they are sold.

Try giving the battery a jump from another battery and see if it cranks.
