Why am i going so slow
Why am i going so slow
hey i have a 93 rx7, it has a new engine and 73k miles total. i had to replace the vacuum hoses along with some coolant lines to the turbos. After i had em replaced there were no more leakes and the engine seemed fine exept i cant get my 0-60 below 8 seconds. I heard u guys talking about some sort of boost pill or something in one of the vacuum lines. i was wondering which line it was in and if that may be the problem. I can hear the turbos spooling up but i feel VERY little boost from them. Please someone tell me they might know what the problem is and if i ca get like a replacement boost pill or something like that. Im clueless as to what the poblem is
Hey.....If you feel the vacuum lines you'll be able to feel the pill in their. If not you need to put one in.....that would be the cause. If the pill is their then you might have an air leak. The factory couplings don't last that long...I would check em if you do find the pill.

Anyways first get a boost gauge to see what you're running.
In the meantime you can use a $20 vacuum/pressure test guage and 6-8 ft of windshield washer/vacuum line ($6) to see what your boost is.
With this we can see what boost you are getting by tapping the upper intake manifold and then test other places to trace the problem.
Timing acceleration froma dead start is not the best way to measure a cars health. Use this instead.
The method:
You need a flat straight away preferably one that would allow you to run it both directions so you can average the times to account for wind.
Start by maintaining a steady 35mph in 3rd gear. Floor it!
At 40 mph hit the timer...a stopwatch is fine.
Keep it floored and in 3rd gear.
Stop the timer at 70 mph.
Repeat as neccasary...careful it gets addictivley fun.
I've seen times range from 4.5 secs to 5.5 secs depending on mods and state of tune.
The Why:
We should'nt use 1/4 mi times as a gauge when talking about troubleshooting and mods. The 40-70 mph in 3rd gear test is awesome for gathering test numbers.
It is easy to do and gets rid of launching and shifting vaiables. You can time your car, then do a mod or tune, and retest.
What is wrong with a dyno?
1. I don't have one.
2. This test is free and can be done nearly any time.
3. A dyno can't tell you what weight reduction has done. I get signifigant variance from a full tank and a 1/4 tank.
I think the 40-70 in 3rd gear gives us a cheap ...make that free, simple, and pretty reliable way to compare.
The last time I tested my Touring it was 5.15 secs...stock no mods with about 1/2 full tank and 65 degrees F.
Using the same test you need to record your boost at certain rpms:
You need to do a 40-70 run in 3rd gear. Cruise steady at 35 mph floor it have someone watch the boost and note the boost pattern. Be as thorough as possible.
You should get:
rpm psi
3,000 10
4,500 8 (as 2d turbo comes on)
4,500+ 10 (recovers almost immediately)
6,000+ 8 (and holds to redline)
Let me know what your numbers are.

If you started at 35 mph, floored it and hit the timer at 40 mph that is a little sluggish. You can measure boost with that $20 vacuum/pressure test gauge which you will need anyway. See if you can find someone to borrow one from if you can't buy one.
