Who has the Walbro pump....POST HERE!!!!!

Hey guys, I have a Walbro pump that I bought from the rx7 store. Has anyone PERSONALLY had one go bad or does anyone know first hand of someones going bad. I'm not talking about someone saying they just dont like it for no reason, or I heard from a friend form a friend from a cousin that a vendor said they dont like it.

This is a VERY important part and I just want to make sure everyone that has owned one didnt run into problems. I've never heard anything bad about them untill now and I just want to verify everyones feelings of the pump.

I've never had a problem with mine and I also know other people(rx7 and non rx7 guys) that have never had a prob with thiers.

And the survey says????

Thanks,
STEPHEN

I've only ever heard good things. Have a buddy recently install one in his 89 TII. No problems, dropped right in.

I put the Denso Competition 500hp pump in my '94.

I have the walbro GSS341. No problems for about 2 years, though the durability isn't great. I put a clamp on the outlet nipple too tight at first and it broke the metal part off. I removed it and haven't had a problem since.

They don't appear to be nearly as durable as a Bosch but the Bosch pumps are well known for having fuel slosh problems. Lou Young cured his track fuel slosh problem by using the Walbro pump and adjusting it so it sits on the bottom of the tank. Might want to talk to him directly about that if you are interested.

Hrm...that's interesting. I have the Walbro, GSS-341, and I don't have fuel slosh problems. I can auto-x with less than 1/4 tank. I too, have had no problems. It's my second Walbro (first was on a different car) and never experienced anything abnormal. The first lasted almost 4 years. Wrecked the car. I'm sure it would have still been going just fine.

He said the Bosch has fuel slosh problems that is cured by installing a Walbro lower into the tank.

This is good info....I'm starting to feel better already lol I'm sure someone is going to change that though lol

Thanks,
STEPHEN

I have the 341 as well... I need 2 things:

1. A site to show how to install it ( a complete newbie here)

2. Is it loud?

Please let me know, thanks!

I bought the 255HP for my DSM 3 years AGO.
Ill never do it again. TOO LOUD. you can hear it over my exhaust (outside and inside teh car) when the tank is low. it also is anoying with the turn signal on. No problem with what it was made for (fuel) but it sure is annoying to have your FP be the thing people know your car for.

My guess is that the people having problems with fuel slosh and a Bosch pump didn't buy the correct Bosch pump.

I've seen directions for "crenellating" the nut fitting (like a castle nut) on the bottom of the Bosch pump intended for inline use for "improved fuel flow". However, the correct Bosch pump for in-tank use has a screened inlet which is nearly the entire bottom of the pump.

Here's the Bosch pump compared to the Walbro...

Jimlab,
What is the part number on the Bosch pump and what application did it come from? Was it from a Porsche with L-Jetronic?
Thanks, Jay

Jim,

The people I know who had extreme slosh problems with the Bosch did have the "wrong" (M2) pump. I don't know how the screened inlet one works in comparison. I'd have to ask around.

I didn't have noise problems with my pump until I removed the rubber isolator at the bottom. After removing it, the sucker is often REALLY loud. I haven't got around to fixing this yet.

No problems with my Walbro...

I've had the Walbro installed in my FD for about two months so far no problems. The Walbro is also very quite can't even hear it when car is ideling with my hatch open. Also technology is always changing especially coming in smaller packaging. Just because the Walbro pump is smaller then the Denso pump(or others) it doesn't mean it doesn't work just as well if not better then others. Don't every under estimate size, if everyone did, everyone would think the FD is a slow car.....!! And we all know the FD isn't a turtle...!!! :-p Tony

the original application for the m2 bosch pump might mount it outside the tank. i'm not 100% on that though (ive never bothered to look), but jim has made me wonder

Alright, what's the deal with the noise level here? Most say you can't hear it at all while a few say that they can hear it over their exhaust ? Wade.....what's the word ? Is it really that loud or did those who complain about the noise level get a bad unit or install it differently ?

For the in-tank pumps, it's best to use the rubber mounting "foot" with the Walbro, and it is advisable to use a piece of fuel-resistant neoprene or rubber around the Bosch pump when you slip a couple of hose clamps around it to mount it. I wouldn't cover any more of the body of the pump than you have to, but any rubber you can get between the pump and any metal it comes into contact with is (obviously) beneficial in cutting down the noise the pump produces during operation.

The noise it will produce when the body of the pump is not submerged, however, is more dependent on the internal design of the pump, I'd suspect.

That's correct. The Bosch pump that M2 is selling is meant to be mounted outside the tank, inline with the fuel feed to the engine. It was never meant to be an in-tank pump.

The Bosch and Walbro pumps are very close in performance. I have the numbers around somewhere, but the bottom line is that the Walbro outflows the Bosch pump at lower pressure levels by a small margin, and the Bosch pump outflows the Walbro at higher pressure levels. Both are excellent pumps. Both outflow the Nippondenso (Supra/Cosmo) pump by a significant amount at all pressures.

The difference is that the Bosch pump has a lot more surface area and will run cooler than the Walbro pump does. There are some benefits to being the size of a Coke can.

have a question to all those that have installed the walbro pump. I Installed mine about a month ago and have been having a problem at startup. When I go to start the car I get no fuel pressure. If i stop trying to start it, I can hear the pump kick on and then I can start it. Anyone else have this problem. I am sure it is because of my mistake installing it. any advice is appreciated. thanks

I've been running the "drop in" GS-341 Walbro for about a year now with NO problems. It's a little noisy with the hatch carpet & devider removed, but acceptable.

For $114.00 this drop in kit can't be beat!

I have no affillation. In fact it was Jimlab that pointed me to this kit about a year ago (or was it longer?).
Eric.
