Question What is your cooling setup?

Just wanted to know what everyone else's cooling setup was. My FD is usually between 195 to 220 degrees. Sometimes it'll go passed that. Today, which was around 85 degrees outside, reached 255 and it worried me.

Rotary Extreme V mount with a Koyo rad. My fans are also set at 86C. I use the pre-mixed (50/50) stuff that wal-mart sells, I can't remember the brand...prestone or something. My gauge rarely goes above 180 deg F and when it does, it drops back down real quick.

How can I adjust/get my temperature to not go so high? It made me do a double take when I saw it read 255 degrees. How do I set my fans to go on at a certain temp? Aftermarket parts?

you can get the HKS fan controller. Dale recently did a writeup on it. Quick search would help. Also look for Pivot Fan controller. Hope this helps

PFC set to 85C, Fluidyne Radiator, 100% water and water wetter. Plus i have a mister for my radiator and intercooler.

Ambient Temp Today: 95F
Road Temp: 105F
Water Temp: 83-85C

Speaks for itself and thats without using the mister.

This is high. Are you running your fans? Did you try changing your thermostat?

I live in hawaii and I usually see temps of 85-90C which is like 175-185F or so. The only time I saw temps of 105-110C was when I had a bad thermostat (stuck shut).

I'm running stock rad/stock fans/alum ast/stock thermoswitch and 60/40 prestone as coolant setup.

The thermostat hasn't been changed yet. When I parked and looked at my gauge, I did here my fans running but I have no clue what it's setting are at. Anyone know around how much I'll be needing to spend to get a good working cooling system? That's why I made this thread. To get a good idea on what or need to get for my FD to not run so hot. Appreciate all the help I can get.

Running between 195F and 220F is normal for a stock fd on a warm day, remember that with the stock thermoswitch the fans don't even kick on until 226F or so. 255F is dangerous though...

I would change the thermostat, get an aluminum radiator, aluminum AST and miata/FC thermoswitch. Other than that just make sure your fans are working and flush the coolant.

255 is asking for a cooked engine. Are you sure your fans are running?

I have only a fluidyne rad, but have the 99 front bumper and a/c completely removed (smic, so with condensor gone the rad is completely exposed to the incoming air). I was able to roadrace my FD in the texas summer at one bar of boost on a 1.7 mile track and my *peak* water temps were 99C!

It's been 2 days since this incident. The highiest I've seen it since then was 223 degrees. I've seen it read high 3 times now, once when I had the a/c on. Just looking for some recomendations.

Hopefully there is no damage and the motor is fine. I realize that swapping front bumpers and/or removing the a/c isnt exactly an easy endeavor.....I would recommend adding more water to your system, instead of running 50/50 try 70/30, and also verify your fans are working as they are supposed to----if you are seeing 255 I doubt they are.

For you guys turning on your fans at 85-86C...why are you turning them on when the thermostat is only 1/4 open? Just paranoid...or is it something else?

The stock T-stat's not full open until 95C...I would think that would be the temp you'd want to stay at or below...not 85-86C.

As others have stated, that is alarmingly high, and I would be suspect that your radiator fans are toast or another issue causing them to be inoperative. Check to make sure that they are working properly ASAP.

255F with normal use suggests a problem with the stock system, or with a modification to it.

Assuming stock, get new:
t-stat
filler cap
ast cap (1.1 bar stant)
spark plugs

Then pressure test system warm, on jacks .. look for small leaks

255F also means stock gage would rise above horizontal to an upper position. Make sure 255F was real.

For steet use, healthy engine, just keep parking lites on in traffic for 210F fan trip.

Search overheat, miata, and "fan mod"

My cooling upgrades, well sealed ducting to MC rad + greddy wp pulley, were only needed for track use.
